Forums - Microsoft Discussion - The Gunstringer preview: Kinect goes 'hardcore'

Sounds like a lot of fun, day 1 purchase.

Looks like another rail shooter to me. The character just runs and avoid obstacles while the player waves his hand to rotate the camera and aim. This is not hardcore.

Why do people make comments when they don't even bother to watch the videos or read the story?

"I was able to strafe left and right while running with subtle movements of my left hand"

"From time to time, the game threw obstacles my way that I either had to doge or jump over, the latter action requiring only a simply upward tug with my left hand."

You control the side to side and jumping movement with your left hand, the character is not avoiding obstacles on his own.  He is moving forward on his own but it's not entirely on rails.

There are also side scrolling sections of the game where you are controlling the movement.

Hmm, personally, I'd rather push a button. Seems much more practical.

is this a retail exclusive release?

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

Sounds like it will be a fun addition to the Kinect stable. I think putting hardcore in inverted commas is a obviously telling readers not to expect a hardcore (take that meaning for however you interpret it) game, but it's not kiddie casual or family party either.

I don't know why people are making a fuss out of the inverted commas hard core tag. Or do people not understand what it means when a descriptive term is put into inverted commas (hint it often means the opposite, or it's a deliberate exaggeration)?

i believe the term youre looking for are quotation marks

its still on rails.

in extraction there were a few sequences were you could move your character, but the game was still on rails (but it didnt have auto aim like this game does)

How is painting targets with your right hand auto-aim?

Also, you failed to read (or more likely just ignored) what I was actually responding to in his post which is his claim that the character does everything himself and you only move the camera and aim.

as i said, having some say in your movement doesnt mean its not a rail shooter.

if you look at the video, its clearly heavily aim assisted (if you dont want to use the term auto aim)

pretty much all you do is get the (giant) reticule close to the target, and it does the rest for you.

You have to get a part of the aiming circle over your target, that doesn't make it assisted.  It means you have a bigger target area available, but you still need to get the circle over your targets, it doesn't snap the reticle to them which is what aim assist would do.

Do you also complain that in Uncharted 2 when you're climing up the rail car at the beginning you just need to point in a direction and hit a button and the character will jump, determine distance and grab the proper handholds by itself?  Sounds like like movement assist, doesn't it?  Then again maybe it's just a game mechanic that makes it less tedious and more fun.

ign says it doesnt work sitting down.

it had a very hard time picking up their arm movements when seated.

and i guess we know have a new eccepted definition of what a hardcore game is.

i sure hope these harcore games dont take over the old ones.

Kotaku had no problems playing it sitting down and apparently Joystiq didn't either.  Remember this is an incomplete, unfinished product, obviously there will be some issues until final release.

And sure its a core type game, is it Halo or Gears of War?  No but it certainly is a game with core mechanics.
