Since when do people buy 40Gb models to play games?

I don't know .... ask the Europeans.
No way.
PS2 is highly profitable for Sony, it helps bring down the large loss on the PS3. Plus as mentioned above its really good marketing for the Playstation brand. People who have only bought PS1/2 are more than likely to be persuaded to buy PS3.

Why? I can't help posting because I don't understand the logic behind that.
40GB PS3 cannot play PS2 games, so why would it lose all of its game library if the developers stopped making PS2 games????
It (PS3's market share) might hit 30%, but definently not more. ~ Neo

Sony should discontinue the PS2. The key is to force people to choose a current-gen console. As long as the PS2 is out there people choose the cheaper older console. The console wars won't have a decisive winner until the PS2 is out of the picture.
Look at it like this, the Wii, 360 and PS3 are the candidates in a big election. The PS2 is an independent that keeps stealing votes from the top three candidates. I'm not saying all PS2 buyers would buy PS3's but they are taking away sales from all three current-gen consoles. Eliminate the PS2 and Sony would push the PS3 harder. I was in shock it took 11 months to promote the PS3 in the US in Ads, print and internet. Sony fell back on PS2 sales but that doesn't help them in the current-gen wars but helps their bottom dollar. In the end the bottom dollar isn't as important as market share.

¿Force people to buy a Wii, 360 or a PS3? (Most likely the first)
Wii says hello, if the PS2 is suddendly shut down, the most likely situation is a stronger support from the third partys who are developing for the PS2 right now...

It doesn't matter if you have 99% marketshare if it causes you go bankrupt.
honestly, i think that because the wii is so popular the ps2 is going to be a significant player for years to come. for those developing wii games the ps2 is a natural system to port to so i don't see supports being cut anytime soon.
