So i was playing Dead Space 2 and out of nowhere my PS3 shut off. The red light started blinking and now wont turn back on, i know that it is dead. I know that i already am going to get a new PS3 but i want all of my saved information! How do i get it from the hard drive, does anyone have any ideas?

You can pull the hard drive.  I don't know if Sony will honor the warranty if you send it back minus the hard drive, but you should contact them to find out.

Firstly... DAMN! Secondly... I survived YLOD. Just barely.

If you can, take your PS3 to a place that can fix YLOD (they should be able to reflow it). They normally don't give any guarentee on how long it will last... because it really is a bit up in the air. But it should give you enough time to transfer your data to a new PS3 at least.

When you have your new PS3, you need to use the data transfer utility (where you run an ethernet cable between your old and new ps3). It should warn you to disable your old PSN content first, which you should do. It's in your account management settings somewhere, and then perform the transfer. It takes a few hours depending on how much stuff you have.

Transfer is the way to go, because even copyrighted saves and other copyrighted data (excluding Singstar stuff) will be transferred and be usable on the new PS3. If you do it the "backup hd and restore to new hd" way, you WILL lose copyrighted stuff. Examples are the Demon's Souls and Killzone 2 save games. The only way they survive is with the transfer utility.

After that you should be good to go. Good luck.

Without resurrecting your console, your data is lost.

Pulling the HDD and swapping it into another console will only result in a prompt on start up to restore/reformat the drive. Every drive is key coded upon formatting to work ONLY with the console in which it was formatted.

All is not lost though.

If you can work a screwdriver or have ever worked with computer hardware, there are tutorials online that outline how to disassemble your particular model PS3 and then *temporarily* fix it via the heatgun/solder reflow fix. You'll also need new thermal paste when you put it back together.

Upon successful resurrection, IMMEDIATELY do the following:

1. Manually copy any non-protected files, and game saves to an external drive. At minimum you will have these to copy to your new console.

2. If you do not have your new PS3 ready, create an archive via the back up function. This will allow you to install all non-protected files within the archive onto any PS3. All copy protected or DRM protected data will NOT transfer. This includes copy protected game saves, PSN purchases, etc.

3. If you have your new PS3 ready (this is your best option), do a direct console to console transfer of your entire HDD. You will have to deauthorize your purchased content on your old console to do this.

Do not just open up your PS3 quite yet.  Is your PS3 still under warranty?  Your solution really depends on whether or not it's still covered by warranty and you want to use it.

You can pull the drive, pop it into an external enclosure, hook it up to your PC, access the partition, find the relevant files, copy them off, and put your hard drive back into your PS3 before sending it in to get replaced, all without voiding your warranty.

OKay i have a lauch 80 gig B/C. There is not warranty and i just bought a new PS3 because i know that the fix is perfect. How can i connect it to a PC?

you could always use the ps3 hd as an external hdd to get your saves on your new ps3

I'm guessing you don't have experience with PS3 formatted drives; they use a proprietary formatting system and the data contained on the partition is not accessible on a Windows, Linux or Mac based PC without custom software. Windows and Mac OSX will prompt for a format when the disk is accessed as the volume will be unreadable.

You don't. PS3 format volumes are not readable on a Windows based PC. Or a Mac.

PS3 format volumes aren't even readable by the PS3 when plugged in externally via USB.
