Chris Taylor also designed Total Annihalation so they are very RTS savvy.

It wasn't so much that. They completely changed the economy system from a unique system a based on rate of output in Supreme Commander, to a more traditional system based on total output in Supreme Commander 2.
They abandoned the most unique and arguably greatest feature of the game in favor of stuff we've been seeing for over 20 years. They claimed they were making it more "accessible", but their sales only suffered as a result of the change.
