playstation had a similar article about how physical media is still relevant and would be used in their next machine. I wouldn't expect either company to go without it, if anyone I would think microsoft but still highly unlikely.

Also backwards compatibility with GC wouldn't be an issue with me as I still have my GC. The systems and games aren't really expensive.

Wii 2 will use Blu-ray media, won't play BD/DVD movies, and will still have Wii backwards compatibility, but not GameCube.   GC games will be added to the Virtual Console though (for $15 each).

Fuck that. I would just skip out on it.

I don't want to rebuy my GCN games!

Then keep your GCN/Wii.  Nintendo's not going to keep paying for those memory card/controller ports and dual optical drive when so few people really demand it.  Hell, if there's a Wii revision, I expect them to drop GCN playback to shave costs.

Look at the GB Micro, DSi, or other handhelds... Nintendo's backwards compatibility only tends to go so far.

Good thing I evolved from a console gamer to a person that just plays the games he likes.

Even better.  Just beef up your PC, rip your GCN games, and play The Wind Waker in glorious 1080p.

Games >>> Consoles

Personally I can understand the GameCube backwards compatability being dropped. If this is the case I'll be putting my GCN games and Wii in storage. I've pulled my DreamCast out every once in awhile to play PowerStone I would probably like having my Wii to play my good old GCN games.

I got suckered out of my GameCube. EBGames was only accepting 5 pre-orders for Wii's. If you wanted to pre-order you either had to pre-order in full or trade in your GameCube for a 50$ pre-order. I didn't have the 279.99$ on hand at the time so I had to trade in my beloved GameCube...sob...sob!

If the Wii's successor doesn't have GC backwards compatability, I will buy a GC again.  I still play through WW regularly and not to mention all the other classics on the system.

I'd like to see a return of cartriage. Discs are way too vulnerable to scratches.

Disappointing.

All of my music is already centrally stored. In the near future, all of my video will be centrally stored. All of my book/magazine/comic purchases will be centrally stored from now on.

It would be nice if I didn't need a shelf for my games, either. Maybe I should hack a solution if Nintendo won't provide one.
