Forums - Gaming Discussion - Europe is key battleground, says Microsoft

"We will sell more consoles next year than this year,"
Oh really? On a 3 year old system? Thats in sales decline?(minus halo and holidays) Going to stuff the channels again are we?

Hey Europeans, how much is the PS3 and the Xbox there. I'd like to know Euros and Pounds for all SKUs if possible.

Currently Playing:

Xbox 360 - Rock Band, NHL 08, Skate, Halo 3, Mass Effect

Wii - Mario Galaxy

From my perspective, if Microsoft truely wanted to have the largest marketshare this generation they would have cut the price of the XBox 360 Priemium to $300 before the Wii and PS3 launched, and would now have the console at $250 ... The fact that Microsoft has had the XBox 360 on the market for over 2 years, with only a $50 price reduction, and no (real) budget game library really negates any benefit they got from launching the system early.

wow by what ten thousand when its that close does it really matter

Absolutely correct... but you'll say the the same thing if the PS3 beats the 360 by ten thousand, right?

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick

Price cuts come next year probably. There is also something called perceived value. If they lower the price below or on par with the Wii when it first launched, people would think that they are equal in power. Also, people will think that the PS3 is much better than the Xbox 360. You cant depreciate the value of your system too quickly. Also, they had virtually no casual games last year to appeal to casuals. It would only have cost them money without much benefits from the casuals that the Wii appealed too.

It's not about matching Nintendo's price because (realistically) Nintendo probably wouldn't have sold the Wii at $250 if the XBox 360 Priemium was $300 ... Microsoft launched the 360 a year earlier than their competition to gain the early mover advantage; what that is, is a lot of small strategic advantages:

  1. Larger established userbase
  2. Larger (better) game library with more budget priced games
  3. Earlier price reductions

Microsoft's pricing strategy (on both the console and its games) has effectively prevented them from taking advantage of the benefits launching early provides.

Wii : £179.99 (£179.98 from amazon (out of stock), huge bundles everywhere else)

Xbox Arcade: RRP £199.99   (£189.99 from amazon)

Xbox Pro : RRP £249.99 (£229.99 from amazon)

Xbox Elite : RRP £299.99 (279.99 from amazon)

PS3 40Gb : RRP £299.99 (£269.99 from amazon)

PS3 60GB: RRP £319.99 (299.99 from Shopto.com (out of stock))

For conversion into dollars just double all the numbers eg. £250 is $500

For euro prices check amazon.fr and amazon.de

"..just keep on trying 'till you run out of cake"

Either way, Sony's high price has allowed Xbox 360 to keep their high prices for as long as the did. Microsoft even stayed firm on pricing even after the 40 gig was introduced.

Yah it's not looking good in Europe for MS, it's really Sony's time to shine. They need GT out soon there, that will guarantee victory in Europe unless MS pulls some crazy shit.

It's not like the sales could go any lower... well I guess it could. But my point is that they don't have to sell much to beat this past year.
