Forums - Sony Discussion - PSN hack lets users unban themselves, ban others

The facts remain, geohot claims he was hacking it to put linux back in, when he started hacking it in linux to begin with. Sony removed the otherOS feature to minimize the possible damage. YES he hit a brick wall afterwards, but the prospect of the console being hacked does make the removal one logical step. Afterall, the otherOS feature was a service. The fact that he decided to grab the whole arm when given a hand, is what caused this shitstorm.

It's just double standards. I didn't use the otherOS, but I got slightly annoyed when it was removed too.. I think feature removing is wrong, but I see why they did it.

Plus Geohot gets way more hate then what he deserves. I'm here to throw some of that back on Sony :P

Since he did it purely for all the homebrew on PS3 -- PS3 must have alot of homebrew, i mean homebrew piracy app, and wait-more homebrew piracy and did you hear the "homebrew" community is currently working on apps to make piracy easier. It is almost like the homebrew community dosn't exist and its simply a group theivies...

Ain't bans done from the server side. I highly doubt hackers can get into sonys servers using there modified PS3 systems let alone unban themselfs without Sony finding out. So if this is true then Sonys going to have a very strong case against hackers to use in the court of law because hacking servers isn't a small thing like running some homebrew or a pirated game. Theres some valuable information being held on some of those servers

His custom firmware completely blocked playing back-ups. Does that sound like the horrible dirty pirate he is made out to be?

Completely? yup, it totally did a great job...

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

in a way, maybe this was a good thing, becasue you can bet your ass the next gen ps4 will be hack proof.

lol. hack proof does not exist. things can be pretty damn hack resistant, but proof? not currently possible. Not even close.

That doesn't really prove it's false...it's just speculation which is about as good as the article I posted which is a rumor.  Can't really say with any confidence which one is right yet.  Part of me hopes yours is right because the alternative sucks, the other part hopes mine is right for the lulz.

Surely the burden of proof is on you to prove it's true?  Bullshit rumours on the internet are not proof of anything.

lol, you're acting like this is a court.  I promise you, it isn't.

lol

Funny.

So after reading this, this is a little scary because it does make complete sense in how it works:

http://www.psnathome.com/general/ps3-hackers-can-now-ban-legitimate-users-and-unban-consoles.html

  • 1. Hacker gets banned for using custom firmware
  • 2. Hacker goes to a forum and grabs a random PSN username from forum tags
  • 3. Hacker changes their console ID to a random ID and the forum users user name
  • 4. Hacker plays as random forum user name until they get themselves and random forum user banned.
  • 5. Go to step 2

While there are no cases of anyone doing this, it's apparently know that the person using custom firmware can modify and send whatever information, including PSN username and console ID, they want to Sony.

That's actually enough to make me take my PSN tag off my sig (and not a big deal since I haven't updated it for probably close to a year).

Yeah, that totally probably could happen.  As far as granted someone just autonomous banning powers though, that'd be stupid.

They could make it a fully open system like the consoles of old.

Then it'd be hackproof, because there would be nothing to hack!

Yep, it was doing a great job till it was cracked by other hackers. Still you don't hear about that fact often because it proves that Geohot isn't the spawn of satan most make him out to be
