Forums - Gaming Discussion - SONY has to be the best publisher going around

Looking at SONY they are one of the few if not only publisher who invests the most in New crazy ip's. There is no other publisher that doesn't drive its franchises to the ground or forces games to be released unfinsihed or didn't get enough time.

looking at SONY they have 3 US studios (naughty dog, insomanic and Sucker punch) who have created an new franchise for sony's consoles each generation (sucker punch only ps2-ps3). they funded heavy rain, mag and modnations for 2010 alone which are out there titles.

They also have an wide range of titles being published that covers an wide range of genres and on top of releasing world wide releases they still fund japanese only games for there home audience.

Why does it seem that SONY is getting everything right in games publishing while the others are getting stuff wrong. Sure sony has the more money but why does MS have such small 1st party when they have plently of money to buy up so many studios and have relied on 3rd party contacts when they have such dedicated fanboy's that would buy anything good or bad thats exclusive (fable 3). Even Nitendo is very guilty of re re re releasing games over and over but have been at least bringing out new innoviative titles.

Then there is the 3rd Party who seem to make so many bad mistakes: bleeding franchises to death , funding bad games choices, making bad investments and not pushing new ips and have been relieing on old franchises.

Now i am not being an fanboy and saying sony is prefect sure they have made there fair share of mistakes in the publishing deparment but it seems that its nothing to there rights and now look. There 1st party 2011 destroy's the others 2 and they are all setting up to being great games.

you would think publishers would start and copy sony when really sony started from nothing 15 years ago to an publishing powerhouse.

I know you are worried about sustainability but... we could also ask ourselves how much love they have spread!

I somewhat agree. but we shouldnt cloud the issue from people like NiKKoM, Sony are a company they want to make money. but what i agree with is the way they go about supporting the users who buy their products and how the PS3 offers those users good quality hardware and software. but they're a multinational company, the same as Microsoft or Nintendo - only they do things a bit differently than those companies.

OT: i think you missed maybe Sony's most important Amercian studio: Santa Monia. which developed the brilliant God of War series, and well those games are phenominal.

and i think we're forgetting how they supported Quantic Dream and David Cage with Heavy Rain, which was a great title. but that type of project would never have got off the ground without their input. the same goes for games like The Last Guardian, which may not exist without Sony.

and this year we have the return of Twisted Metal, which again looks excellent. same goes for the other studios like Media Molecule, and Guerulla Games are also developing very well.

and thats why as long as Sony are in the industry supporting gamers like the way they do, i'll always be a gamer that supports them!!

That´s the big question...

I personally think that Sony was kind of forced to do that, in order to diferentiate itself.  Nintendo doesn´t need to get new IPs. If I have a brand wich sells at least 10 mil copies everytime it´s on the cover of a game, why bother?

And MS strategy seems to rely on their popularity in US, granted by Halo, LIve and now, it seems, Kinect. That´s why they cut so many studios, they probably thought they were spending too much for little gain.

While Sony needs new IPs to try and atract gamers looking for something new. I just think this is the best scenario for us gamers. Who can complain about Heavy Rain, Uncharted, infamous, LBP and other great new IPs we got this gen?

I am sure Sony has made a lot of money from their games, its the hardware that has made a loss. As a publisher Sony is doing awesome, better than any other publisher out there, the only one that comes close is EA.

Best thing about Sony is gamers get a very good new IP every year. 2008 - LBP, 2009 - Demon's Souls, 2010 - Heavy Rain, 2011 - ? (Last Guardian?)

Yeah, I've always had this opinion about Sony. They're a pretty chill company when it comes to publishing; they just let the devs practically do whatever they want. I'm sure they make tons of money on their games, but some people are just too blind to experience the awesomeness of them =/

My biggest issue is that Sony is still at a deficit; losing money. I remember a thread a while back that stated how much SCE had lost this generation, and it was pretty deep. Meanwhile it showed Nintendo going through the roof compared to MS and Sony, with MS also making a profit as well. It pains me to see such a great company who's going through all this crap to please users still at a deficit.

I might believe this if Kevin Butler told me so, but he isn't so I don't.

I live in a shiny happy world where everything that Nintendo does is perfect unless it's Metroid : Other M, and then I pretend lke it never happened.

Ignoring the money thing which I'm sure is mainly lost of the hardware side of things not the game developers/publishers side.

Sony Computer Entertainment studios I think are some of the best in the world, some of them having Teams which rate higher then some whole developers. Sony also seem to invest a lot into new IPs and other developer studios titles as well, they had a lot of faith in Media Molecule obviously in the end buying them, buying out smaller developers and turning them into powerhouses (Guerrilla).

In my view they are doing the best thing, moving into a role of owning and developing their own line of studios and IPs not only to help the consoles they create but if things do go wrong and they leave the hardware side of things they have an whole legion of development studios to fall back on (Like Sega did) to rival that of EA and Activision. They are also helping other 2nd and 3rd Party studios forming great relationship with them

MS seem to have done the opposite. The could have acquired Bioware but didn't and Bungie have now left. They have disbanded 5 or 6 studios over the last few years.

Hmm, pie.

I'd say Nintendo's better largely because they actually manage to support 2 platforms well simultaneously.  Sony looks great from a PS3 only perspective, but when you bring PSP into it...

The other thing about Sony, is that while they have introduced a lot of new 1st party IPs this gen (and they do every gen) they also iterate on them faster than any other 1st party and pump out sequels like clockwork.  We're already on threequels for most of their big new PS3 IPs, which feels a bit excessive imo.
