Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony: We've Learnt From High PS3 Price Point

The E3 2005 meme with Sony CEO Kaz Hirai stating that the PlayStation 3 would be $599 will probably never be forgotten. But according to Shuhei Yoshida, Sony has learnt from the mistake they made with the console's high price point and they will put that into practice with the NGP.

Speaking to Edge Magazine, Yoshida said "It's a big lesson we learnt from the PS3. There's no point putting everything you want into a device and doing the math later. We always had the price and consumer in mind. We had to sell something that people could buy."

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss Andrew House previously stated that the NGP would be "affordable".

$299 PSP2 here we come :)

Around the Network

$299 is affordable? Um, ok.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

Isn't this more powerful than the PSPhone?

I can't imagine it selling for any less than $349 with what's under the hood, the OLED multitouch, etc.

If it retails for $299, I'll be beyond surprised... but pleasantly surprised.

We learnt how our mistake was made, and hope to make bigger ones in the future!

Around the Network

its gonna be 350 or less...at least that's the price point I want

some people whine about pretty much everything sony does. With the NGP they have done everything perfect so far, they definitely have learned and it shows. Wonder if they will give NGP some time at GDC next week

Even though I believe anything over 200 for a handheld is too high. 300 dollars is not that much money.

Well Sony has stated that they will be selling the NGP at a loss, so maybe a $299 NGP isn't really that far out of the picture.

It's good that Sony has realized their past arrogance and can't get away with selling a video game system at some outrageous price point. And it's about time they addressed this as well.

If they had the price in mind the whole time why haven't they told us yet?

I think they would have a price range in mind not an exact price. There is still around a year to go till launch and depending on productions costs and such that most probably will go down by then, price will vary. But they will announce something that important at E3 or TGS, not at the reveal.
