Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will your favourite game of all time ever be topped?

Yes, next month actually.

Around the Network

Resident Evil 2, it will never be topped because everything was so new and diferent back in the 90s. I recently played RE2 and it still holds up very well.

Hrm... until the middle of last year, I was in the Persona 3 FES camp. P4 came close to me, and I loved more of the same gameplay, but it wasn't as fresh as 3 was. It was an RPG that made me think, and made me actually use more commands than 'attack'. And it was a long game. But last year, Dragon Quest 9 came out. The story, as per the rest of the series, is weak, but it keeps adding more stuff to the game, giving me more to do without any extra cost. And for the first time, it's also a non-Atlus game that makes me want to use attack magic. (Mind you, I've not needed to do this since FF1.) I'm 370 hours in, and still going...

Will it be topped? Probably; it did just recently come out. I'm not going to be surprised if it's an Atlus game that takes the slot back, and after that, I don't expect it to be easily beaten again...

-On a quest for the truly perfect game; I don't think it exists...

The only way my favorite gaming experience could ever be topped is if they remade FFX with higher resolution graphics and superior audio.

I survived the Apocalyps3

1) Uncharted 2

2) by Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception of course!!,

 then by Uncharted 4 for PS4.  ;)

nothing tops tales of symphonia! ever.

Not even he new Tales of Xillia?

hmm nope but i hope it enters my top ten lloyd just makes symphonia to great for me.

Before 2008 I didn't even think a game would dethrone Kingdom Hearts II for the spot of My Favorite Game ever.

Then came MGS4 and topped KH II as the best game ever for me.

2010 has gone and although there were some close games that could have topped MGS4, they still didn't and this year I don't think will happen again.

TBH the only game that can possibly top MGS4 in future is Final Fantasy Versus XIII and KH III when it's announced.

Earthbound with Mother 3 being tied with it though Earthbound is older so I usually just list it  since it was first

And will it be topped? Who knows, not much has even come close as far as creating a unique world, with a story with many many philosophical underlying tones with a lot of humor, it's just damn good writing, on top of that it's a fairly challenging RPG unless you grind.  So a lot of aspects I like in games... it's not impossible but with Itoi no longer making games and the typical game being targeted towards the lowest common denominator... it's hard to see it coming anytime soon, until some real thinkers and artists make some games.

1. Persona 4

2. No - well not from this gen anyway. The only type of game I reckon could top it for me would be another story-driven JRPG and this gen has been pretty bad for that IMO. Maybe Persona 5 will be just as fresh and exciting as P4, or maybe I should look back to Persona 3...

Persona 3 is much better than Persona 4.... in story anyway. The gameplay is not as good as P4. P4 was an incredible game, but one thing that bugged me was that its plot mostly derived from plot twist instead of any real development or thinking.

P3 just dominates in that area. Most incredible character development I've ever seen, though it's music is not as good as P4.

Persona 3 is my favorite game ever though.

I've played like the first two hours of Persona 3, and I was starting to doubt whether it was anywhere near as good as P4. IMO, the characters didn't seem as deep or likeable, that Taturus place was really dull and the city setting wasn't as enjoyable as the rural-ness of P4.

I either felt I should give up and avoid disappointment or continue and hope the game gets better as it went along. I chose the former. But the story is a very big part of the game to me in an RPG - is it really better? I'll take your word for it and restart P3 again this half term, but to me, at the first couple of hours anyway, there seemed to be nothing going for the game storywise.
