Forums - Gaming Discussion - Gamercise Me - Can games really help weight loss?

My name is Luke Collins, and I'm overweight. I'm 31, 5'10'', and 280 pounds. I don't have a problem with exercising and eating right in the first place, just sticking with those things.

Well I like gaming, and my family and I have collected quite a few exercise games for the Wii and the 360 in the past few months, and I'm actually liking a lot of these games as well. Thus I am seeing if doing lots of exercising in the games can help me lose weight. And I'm posting this here and elsewhere, seeing if

Aside from the occasional walk, all the exercising I do will be with exercise games. No gyms, and no special diets. Not that I won't take out fattening foods, but I won't be replacing meat with tofu either (plus turkey meat is also healthy and tastier).

For the first week, I'm spending a half hour each day playing these games, and then adding fifteen minutes every week until I get to two hours. If this works, and I start seeing results by then, I'll be sticking with two hours a day until I get to below 200 pounds, and then sticking with an hour or so each day from then on.

In case you are curious, the exercise games, or at least those you can exercise to, my family owns are:

  • The Biggest Loser (Wii and 360; actually that's the only such game we have for the 360 so far, so the rest listed here are for the Wii)
  • Daisy Fuentes Pilates (although that's my sister's, so I'm not sure I'll try that for a while)
  • Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party 3 (unfortunately we live on a second floor apartment, so we can't use it that much)
  • EA Sports Active (bought used, since... let's just say I don't want to give EA my money right now)
  • Gold's Gym Cardio Workout
  • Gold's Gym Dance Workout
  • Jillian Micheals Fitness Ultimatum 2009 (although that's also my sister's, so I'm not sure I'll try that for a while)
  • Jillian Micheals Fitness Ultimatum 2010 (see above)
  • Mario Power Tennis (even though it's lighter than most)
  • We Cheer
  • We Cheer 2 (probably my favorite of these, and partly even for the right reasons)
  • Wii Fit Plus
  • Wii Sports
  • Zumba Fitness

This is a picture of how I look now, and I'll take another picture every month, but posting other updates every week.

I don't own many fitness games and I am not heavy-Set so I am not the best person to answer this as I don't really know...but seeing as nobody else wants to post I will.

Well, I only have Wii Fit/Plus, & Wii Sports/Resort that can really be considered Fitness games. I have played Just Dance at a friends house as well as played Kinect Adventures.(Not that K.A is an exercise game but I just named it to say I know how Kinect works)

With my experiences, all 4 Wii games that I own(W.F,WFP,WS,WSR) can make your heart rate go up...but like anything to do with moving around your heart rate is supposed to go up. As I said I can't really say if they can help you lose weight but IMO I honestly don't think its the best method to lose weight though it might make you healthier because of cardeo exercise. Kinect I would imagine would be the same way...will get you moving around but won't be too effective in losing weight.

IMO both the Wii and Kinect are fun ways to get moving but if you are serious about losing a lot of weight then I would try someting else. They are mainly fun and not working out equipment.

Throw some weight lifting in there. Lean muscle is the key to burning more fat during exercises.

This experiment is just with video games. But I can allow accessories, so I will look into the Wii dumbell attachments.

wii sports boxing i still remember in my small room 4 years ago in 30 degrees celius heat sweating and getting tied.

I was stuffed after an hour of waving my arms around like an idiot.

but i have lost 10 kilos running for 3 km every day for the past 2 months as well as eating well

you might as well there that.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

i'm a fan of exergaming. last year i started in february with wii fit plus and Ea Sports Active and i later bought EASA More Workouts and now EASA 2. I've lost 10 Kg in a year and i'm in a better shape than last year.

I would be intersted to know if that works.

I know that you said that you don't want to do a diet...But I recommend you an metabolism diet...  Don't worry you still can eat a lot of stuff you like the only difference is that you try eat thing that boost your metabolism....And I guess you also want to burn fat right?

Just look the things up that boost your metabolism and try to eat less of the things that decrease your metabolism..   That is basically what people do in Gyms to use their fat to create muscles;.

Sadly you can't play Dance Dance revolution...it is really one of the games that make me sweat easily ^^'..

Hmm maybe you should look up if you can use the dance mat on your laptop?  You download Stepmania (legally) for free it is just like Dance Dance Revolution the only difference it is free and their are more than 10.000 songs for it...So you could maybe go to a place with your laptop (around your neighbourhood) and play it their;..Also very addicting ^^';
