Forums - Gaming Discussion - RPG recommendations

Hi all,

I’ve been gaming since the late 80s and have played hundreds of games over the years but the one genre that’s eluded me has been RPGs.

Aside from Pokémon Blue, half hour of Mario RPG and about 25hrs of Final Fantasy VII (my friend accidentally deleted my save file), I have pretty much zero experience in the field.

What game(s) would you all recommend for me to play?

What systems do you have (current and classic)?

Would you prefer recomandations for a specific platform or any RPG is ok?

Why don't you make like a tree and get out of here?

I have:

NES, SNES, N64, GC, Wii

GBA, DS

PS1, 2, 3

X360

Any games for any of them, any RPG im not fussed.

And it might help to know what are your favourite games too. RPGs is a very heterogeneous genre and it could be related to most things.

Mass effect 1 and 2 would be my first two choices for you.

On the DS, pick up Chrono Trigger and FFVI Advance.

On the Wii, I believe Secret of Mana is on the VC.  Get that.

If you're looking for WRPG's, go ahead and pick up Fable 1, 2, and 3 along with Mass Effect 1 and 2.

Platformers are probably my favourite types of games, action/adventure games like Assassins Creed/Zelda are good fun to.

I also like FPS but I kinda prefer them to be straight forward like Call of Duty rather than story driven, I played Bioshock which I thought was great but I do prefer to just run and gun

Demon's souls (ps3 only)

Valkyria Chronicles (ps3 only)

Phantasy star games (just download the first 4 for pc via emulator or the collections that were released for pc)

FFVI,VII,IX,X

Mario rpg (snes)

Yakuza 3 is a bralwer with alot of rpg elements (ps3 only)

Disgaea games (ps2 and ps3)

thats all I can really think of

I am very tempted to pick up Mass Effect/Fable although im a bit more interested in JRPG tbh.

Are Fable/Mass Effect the sort of games where i'd have to start at the 1st one to get the full benefit or are they like Zelda/Final Fantasy where each game is unique?
