Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why Final Fantasy VI will always be better than VII

I think I'm going to change my avatar into something angrier. It's too bad my wife doesn't really grimace.

I stopped here "Final Fantasy VI has terrible gameplay, it's broken and boring."

Why you think that? The FFVII gameplay is a poor/light copy of FFVI gameplay... both have materia/esper, limit break/super near dead attack, etc... but FFVI had a little more like status bonus on levels and so much more especial commands/magics/summons.

And... characters, story, villian... is all way better in FFVI than FFVII.

PS. I loved FFVII and give it a 9/10 socore... but FFVI deserve a 9.8/10 because overall is a better game.

I thought FF6s gameplay was decent - yeah its way outdated by todays standards, but it was good for its time. i agree that graphically FF7 is no where near as attractive as FF8 or FF9, but i think it holds up pretty well.

the thing with pre-rendered backgrounds like they used in the PS1 era, is that they still look good today, Resident Evil 2 and 3 still look very good. the only problem with FF7 is the character models and the world map, battle graphics arent bad.

but i also agree with the comment about characters, the really big problem with FF7 (in comparasion to FF8 and 9) is the depth of characters - the characters only speak when its relevant to do so. and they only say things that are relevant when are where you are. in FF8 and 9 the characters dialogue would have all types of mannerisms and a lot more depth so the characters would feel a lot more 3 dimesional in that respect. yes Barret and Cid would swear, etc now and again, but the characters never felt as though they were as fleshed out as the later FFs or other RPGs. alternatively you have the inverse of that in FF13 where the characters talk too much shite.

FF6 was good in the character department - but i really had no interest in characters like Gogo, Umaro, or even Mog. the thing with the later FFs is that the characters were more relevant in that respect.

I actually found the characters and thier interactions more amusing and fun in FFVII, probably because it's more teeny and japanese than FFVI (we were all younger).

I should clarify my comment on the FFVI gameplay--

It's bad because it's broken.

Each character has their special abilities that are totally unbalanced.  You have people like Edgar that destroys everything and then you have a pretty useless Celes.  You have something like Sabin that takes effort but the effort is worth it and then you have something like Cyan where you sit and wait.  You also have ones like Relm, Gau, and Strago that can be decent but totally aren't worth the effort that are needed to be only decent.

There's just no real balance there.  Cyan is a fantastic character that has some great stuff in the World of Ruin but I never have him in my party if I don't have to because his special ability sucks.  What generally happens is you have Edgar, Sabin, Gogo, and then the people with the highest magic.  Those special abilities are just largely wasted.

Next, Evade.  It's broken.  It doesn't work.

Finally, there's just the traditional turn based combat.  It may be traditional and it may be what worked then, but that doesn't make it good.  There's some strategy in deciding how to level your characters with the magicite, but that's just obnoxious micro management.  The rest is just mindless button mashing which really isn't that fun.

Like I said, FFVI is my favorite game of all time but it is in no way due to the gameplay.  It was acceptable at the time, but if that were released in a new game today it would get slaughtered.  That part has not aged well at all.

I don't know why it's so important for some people to insist on that FFVI is better than FFVII. Does it really matter?

only read the first like 20 words, then i've stopped.

its a matter of taste, both games are well designed. FFVI was - compared to V - a graphical BEAST, and it worked. same as FFVII, which had pre-rendered environment, which was also a technical milestone

I'm a Foreigner, and as such, i am grateful for everyone pointing out any mistakes in my english posted above - only this way i'll be able to improve. thank you!

I stopped here again.

Celes has Runic... one of the best abilities (the best one is Morph)... all magical bosses and enemies became easy with it... and the Edgar ability (Tool) is so... hummm... weak.

Just because you don't know how to use the FFVI gameplay... means that it is broken.

My best group: Terra (leader), Locke, Sabin and Celes.

Edit - FFVI has just one character overpower... Terra after receive the Morph (and used a lot to increasing the morph time).

I completely disagree. I recently played both, and I still love them both. The graphics on both were fine. As you said, FFVI was at the height of the 2D era so it's graphics are still charming, and FFVII still looks fantastic if you play on the small screen of a PSP.

And both deserve a full blown remake on 3DS or NGP (or both).

Your not helping to defend the Graphics my saying that.

Now, what did you say about its story? Not interesting?

For a fact, it is the only Final Fantasy game I've replayed many times over and, it is still selling on the PSN.
