Forums - Sales Discussion - Is Killzone 3 selling systems?

I was reading this article

http://www.huliq.com/10177/killzone-3-helping-sony-sell-ps3-systems

"Data custom compiled by HULIQ News shows a direct correlation between increased pre-orders of Killzone 3 and sales of Playstation 3 consoles."

"HULIQ News has been regularly publishing a weekly tracking chart analyzing the top 20 selling SKUs of video game software and major hardware purchases (e.g. systems and large peripherals, such as the PS Move and Kinect). In watching the trends of early 2011, for a surprisingly long time pre-orders of Killzone 3 were on the proverbial milk carton. In fact, for the week of January 24th, I wrote that "Sony execs counting on [Killzone 3] being a halo title for its Playstation Move controller (not to mention 3D gaming) are no doubt shifting uncomfortably in their chairs as pre-order data rolls in."

I've personally never heard of 'Huliq News' which makes me a little sceptical, but I'm not particularly well versed in these matters so I was wondering what you guys thought. Is KZ3 likely to be a system seller? Obviously I mean more so, than other platform exclusives, I'm sure every exclusive sells at least a few systems. I bought my own PS3 for Killzone 2, so to me it seems plausible, but considering the critical reception of Killzone 3... (worse than 2) I didn't actually think we'd see it performing that well, let alone selling systems.

Killzone 3 isn't a system seller. I don't think it will move systems honestly. Anything is possible so we will have to wait and see.

Those who know nothing can understand nothing.

Killzone 2 certanly moved sales, but i just don't see it happening. LittleBigPlanet did not move squat and Gran Turismo wasn't exactly system seller of the year either. So i don't see it happening. But who the hell knows these days lol

I don't expect to see a big rise in hardware sales when KZ3 releases to be honest. I personally love the franshise, but, it's just not as popular as other system sellers such as Halo and Gran Turismo.

And if the pre-order charts are anything to go by, KZ3 won't be much bigger than it's predessor.

I think it will sell a lot of systems. Probably a large enough boost to carry it to a first place for a week or two. I think the PS3 community is going to welcome the game very well and that it has potential to sell huge numbers due to the countless missteps with the PS3 online component for Black Ops. As for it helping move I doubt it.

It'll show, but it won't be something huge like Halo.

Forgot to quote the more important parts of the article

"Even more importantly for Sony, however, is that the marked increase in Killzone 3 pre-orders has been matched by a sudden jump in sales of the 160GB version of the Playstation 3 console. The console has seen some aggressive promotions lately, most notably by specialty retailer GameStop, which did spark a measured increase in demand. Data for the current week is not yet complete, but early indicators show that the console saw a sudden spike in sales beyond the previous promotional increase - just as Killzone 3 pre-orders spiked around the launch of the open beta."

But erm, you guys are probably right. I mean I didn't expect the game to do significantly better than KZ2 (I think KZ3 will top out around 3m sales). Which is why I thought it was a little weird it seemed to be selling systems, as the article suggests.

i think the only game that can sells system is uncharted 3

halo 3 or reach? reach didnt move squat.

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

The articles misses on the fact that this is a correlation and as anyone can tell, correlation =/= causality. Rise in pre-orders could also be due to other factors like shop offers, time of year (valentine's day coming up), etc.
