Forums - Sony Discussion - NGP: How long before security is broken?

With the PS3, Sony did a very good job on system security.  It may be hacked now, but it took an enternity (in hacking time) to do this.  However, with the PS3 compromised and with Android being the main OS, will NGP hold up for as long?  Nearly as long?

3DS certainly hasn't lasted very long, if you believe the claims of R4 and acecard, but (then again) security has never been Nintendo's strong suit.

Id say that sony are going to be alot better preprepared this time around. I dont think it will reach the 4 years the ps3 managed but id say 2 or 3 years.

Yeah i know my spelling sucks but im dysgraphic so live with it :3

Conegamer - I say that the PS3 will beat the DS next week in Japan  (for hardware sales) Forfeit is control over others avatar for 1 week.

Followup question... will the Android OS make it easier?  Theoretically, once any Android device is hacked, the hooks the OS uses to the hardware may provide some illumination in hacking... a vector of attack if you will.

First of all the PSP2 won't use Android, I don't know where you got that. It will run the Playstation Suite, which will also be available on some Android phones, but that's about it.

Second, the PS3's security was very lacklustre. The PS3 is completely cracked now because of a stupid mistake by Sony, and they can't do much about it. I don't see why you would call that good security. The only thing that protected them the first few years was the availability of OtherOS as it satisfied the majority of the hackers who could do their things with it. Once Sony removed it it didn't take long for them to crack it open.

I got the idea from the 1000's of sites, this one included that posted the high probability of it.  Now that it is clear then that actually isn't necessarily a good thing.  Android compatibility could have given NGP a vast array of easily recompiled apps.  In terms of differentiation from the competition (3DS) that would be a good thing.

As for your statement that PS3 had poor security... perhaps, but 360 was compromised practically before launch, so (even if hackers weren't "seriously" working on it for more than a year or so) it still took a while.

So you are saying that hackers were so happy with their OtherOs feature that they didn't even bother cracking the PS3? Maybe thats truth who knows but four years are four years.

They weren't happy with it, mainly because you couldn't access the GPU, but it was enough for most of them.

3.56 looks like its unhackable for now, and Sony only needed a few weeks, so looks like they are doing a good jop, and for NGP the security will be pretty strong from release away so lets hope they keep it that way.

for now I dont think it will be very soon, and if so, then it will NEVER be as deadly as with the psp

Sony need to put a chip that destroys some minor essential components of the system when activates...

Then when hackers crack the system and millions of people start to hack, Sony should remains silent and activates a countdown in this chip and let they play on PSN. When the countdown reaches to zero(after weeks or months) all pirated NGPs stop working in the same time. Or at least destroy the Wifi/3GP chip to stops from playing online.

That would be the most awesome event in the gaming history.

And would also probably cause a legal shitstorm, as good as it sounds I think it's too good to happen, I hate pirates as much as any other guy.
