Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will Spyro and Crash be saved, or lost forever?

Back in the 90's while I was growing up my favorite consoles were always Nintendo made. My third favorite franchise was Sonic. But despite all the love I gave to Nintendo and Sega their were three big franchises I loved on the PlayStation, these titles were Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon and Twisted Metal.

In my teen years I was given a PlayStation and I bought all the Spyro's and Crash games availible. I loved Spyro and beat all of his games completely. I also loved to play Crash from time to time when I wasn't playing my N64. These two titles were for me the biggest franchises I wanted to play and own a PlayStation for.

However when Vivendi took over and began releasing Crash and Spyro games for the other consoles, I was alright with the first game from Spyro and Crash respectively. However the quality of the franchises quickly faded. I got more and more upset with every Spyro and Crash title until I stopped buying them altogether.

Then the news that Activision was merging with Vivendi Universal made headlines and I was extatic. I wanted to see what Activision would do with Spyro and Crash. However I may be wrong but I don't think they've released a single title for the two franchises.

So do you think Activision will bring us new Spyro and Crash games? If they do will they return the franchises to their routes and make them AAA games again. Or will they fail to create decent titles and see them bomb like Vivendi's games did? Or will Activision just let Spyro and Crash die by not releasing any new installments?

I would love to say I agree with you because it's clear that you feel emotional or nostalgic about those games (they were part of your childhood, right) but I'm afraid I can't. I feel we are better off without them.

My younger brother is 21 now and he used to play both franchises on our PSX, along with Medievil and Jersey Devil. Hahaha. I used to make so much fun out of him and sometimes I still do. I was a fed up Nintendo fan boy at that time and I felt that playing those games after Yoshi's Island, DKC iterations, Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie was filthy and innapropiate.

Now, seriously, I don't know what are the odds of those games returning.

I believe there's a Spyro's Kingdom title announced for Wii (though not necessarily exclusive). Or something like that anyways...

But Spyro immediately turned to shit after 3. Crash, well...after CTR and Crash Bash, it was Crash: The Wrath of Cortex. That was a decent title. But the games afterwards just sucked hard.

Honestly, unless Crash and Spyro are returned to Naughty Dog and Insomniac respectively, I have very little faith.

But boy did I love playing them back in the day (and even to this day).

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

So I read abit about the rumoured Spyro's Kingdom. From what I read its going to take place in the same universe as the failed and God awful trilogy took place. Man I hope that isn't true, I want to see Activision try to bring Spyro back to its routes. The camera and quality of gameplay in the trilogy were horrible I could barely play fifteen minutes without turning them off.

I don't think Naughty Dog and Insomniac are the only two studios that could bring the franchises back to their former glory.  Retro proved that they could make a DKC game as good as Rare. So its been proven other developers can make quality games of franchises which they did not start.

I don't know who I'd like to see take over Spyro and Crash. I'd prefer it if Activision went on a hiring binge hiring some platformer developers. Form a new studio to take over Crash and Spyro titles. Also not rush these titles to market I bet in the hands of a good studio and a couple years development they could bring both franchises back to their former glory. Also Activision is the biggest publisher if they can't make a quality platformer then they sure don't deserve to be in the lead.

nope only Naughty Dog can make an good Crash Banicoot game but they are in the tradition of ending an franchise every new gen. Sadly Uncharted wont past 4 besides the psp2 spin offs and the racing game

i dont give a fukk about a new Spyro & Crash game as long they are not developed by Insomniac & Naughty Dog...why a new Spyro or Crash if its full of bullshit like every title after the third title in the series?

Crash & Spyro also was part of my childhood...man how i loved these titles...but thats it...but it never was that hard cause 1 gen later we got Ratchet & Jak from the same developers and i LOVED it...the only difference was i was a little bit older...and now again 1 gen later we still got great Ratchet games and Uncharted...what do you need more? ^^

how sad it will sound but we all gotta go with the time and make the best out of it...and if you wanna play Crash & Spyro then buy the old titles on the PSN and get it started...such classics like this never get old believe me!

I doubt Spyro and Crash can return to their excellent roots without their original developers, Insomaniac and Naughty Dog. I loved these games when I was a kid and I still do but right now, Spyro and Crash are dead to me.

The rumour is Neversoft (Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero) are rebooting Crash. No idea where I read that rumour - I think one of the official console magazines had it in them.

The obvious problem for Crash, Spyro and any platformer franchise like that is just nowadays they can't sell that much. Last gen, the million sales each Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank and Jak and Daxter game got were fine, but with HD consoles higher costs, if a genre / style of game can't get far beyond a million it's not going to happen - hence why Insomniac are pretty much focused on Resistance now and ND on Uncharted.

You'd think they could do something really cool with Crash or Spyro on the Wii (What with Mario kicking arse n all), but even Sonic, who has far more appeal then crash / spyro, doesn't get much beyond a million there. So I guess the answer is this sort of game just doesn't sell like it did in the PS1 days :(.

However! Sly Cooper 4 was 'announced' in the Sly Collection so this type of game isn't totally dead. Maybe it's just going to migrate to something like the NGP, where the game can be produced on a smaller budget to make financial viable - but is no longer hindered by lack of a camera controlling analogue stick. I reckon that's where Sly Cooper 4 is so hopefully that's a trend or something. I'd love to see any of them return though, but it's hard to see how they could make them as good as we want them to be and sell enough copies to make it viable.

None of the latest instalments can compare to the heights of Winter Tundra of Spyro 2 or Orient Express in Crash 3: Warped (those are just some of the classic examples).
