Forums - Sony Discussion - So, Let's Talk PS3 Mass Effect 2 Sales

88K opening. A little disappointing to say the least. Yet EA/Bioware saying the game was as rare as hen's teeth towards the end of opening week, and some retailers saying they sold their entire first order (which was obviously very low, with low expectations.

So far with EMEAA and Americas in for its 2nd week we have 50K in sales. So a ~43% 2nd week drop. On an absolute basis 43% 2nd week drop is a very good result. But it's kinda easy to achieve a sub 50% drop when your first week's sales were low tro start with.

At this early stage can the legs be predicted leading up to Mass Effect 3? If ME2 can cruise along at 20K in sales per week during the year then it can inexorably make its way to 700-800K by the time Mass Effect 3 comes along. With a price drop it should be able to keep sales going past Mass Effect 3 and perhaps eventually make 1 million. This would be a pretty good outcome for the Franchise that will only ever be 2/3 of what it is on PC/360.

Or if the legs are terrible it might struggle to make 250K, and ME3 will bomb possibly even harder.

What do you think? Will Bioware/EA get a return for taking Mass Effect to PS3, or will it be an ill conceived move, and because of MS owning the original game they should have left the game as PC/360 only, and simply moved on to another Sci-fi RPG franchise after ME3 was done, somewhat akin to what Bungie is now doing post Halo?

I know I would have eventually got a PC capable of playing the game, so either way I wouldn't have missed out, but I am glad I'll now be able to play it sooner rather than later.

There is till an unknown number of digital sales to consider, although i doubt it will be very high.

i don't think the port was too expensive. they probably worked on a multiplat version from the getgo anyway.

i suppose they always knew it would realease on the PS3 they just could not disclose it for the duration of the timed exclusive contract.

i wonder how much money they got for timed exclusivity. in the end microsoft might have payed for the PS3 version

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

I just dont see this game taking off til they drop the price of it.... Well im not buying it til they do.... Why do i wanna pay 60 bucks for a game that was out a year ago, no thank you il just play it on my 360..... But when mass effect 3 comes out im getting it on my ps3, no doubt there....

what do you mean? theyr selling more copies of me2 which is good. and considering they had low expectations for the game then i think they would be happy with 1 million sales for me3 on ps3. im saying ltd for me2 ps3 500k if its lucky. once price goes down well see a sale increase. also, once me3 comes out it will get legs.

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

Give it some time - most people are probably waiting for price drops.

Bargin bin and bundling....that's the ticket...I sure hope it was worth it to EA (a company who is STILL losing so much money), to lose the financial support from M$ in promoting the game as an psuedo-exclusive.  I wonder if ME3 will match even match sales of ME2?

I want to get it but havent yet for many reasons.

1) I got loads of games over Christmas and have no time to play

2) I could get the game on my laptop for a LOT less.

3) I wasn't blow away by the demo - although by all reports its a great  game

4) I will wait for it to get to 30 euro on PSN the I'll buy

I'm sure it wont be too long for it to go cheap since ME3 is on the way.

I think it'll have great legs - it'll get a price cut when ME3 comes out then will sell well.

This is not an exit.

PS3 Bioshock sales.

Nuff said.

Maybe Mass Effect 2 isn't as amazing or incredible as so many people hyped it to be. Same goes for Bioshock.

I'm a PS3 owner who was excited to finally be playing an installment in the hugely reverred ME series, and purchased ME2 at launch on PS3. And I have definitely been enjoying the game, but I don't think it's anything all that spectacular or groundbreaking to be honest with you; or at least it's not quite GotY material (imo). Thus far in my playtime, my assessment would be that it's a fairly-solid game with some solid shooting mechanics with (dissapointingly) light RPG elements. The story and universe is obviously very well-constructed, and as are the characters, the dialog, the facial animations, etc. Great game overall, but the amount of RPG depth (or lack thereof) is a downer.

I also felt that Bioshock was overhyped/overrated when I finally bought that after all the hype preceding it.

See PS3 Bioshock Sales (late port)

Then see PS3 Bioshock 2 sales (day & date with xbox 360 system)

See the similarity between those games releases and ME2 and (in future) ME3.

ME3 will be fine on PS3.
