That's because USA are not densely populated enough compared to other countries, it must be expansive the ISPs... Japan and Korea are very densely populated and no wonder they can afford better Internet speeds for less. In France we have 30 megs/s for 30 €/mo., we rank 3rd after Korea and Japan for Internet quality.

Again, that "densely" excuse. I am pretty sure some US cities are a lot denser than yours. Prices aren't any lower. Same for Canada, only worse.

OMG, USA is expensive...

Here in Brazil I pay 65 US Dollars for a Fiber at 30MB/5MB (downup), and it work fast.

PSN: franco-br
MGS4, GH, MW2, GT5p, WipeoutHD, etc..etc..

wow after reading all these discussions, only one person actually know whats going on and why price is so high. Its called Monopoly,  You really need to look closely around you, all telecoms are monopoly in a way.  I forgot the correct rephrase to use, its a differen't form of monopoly.  Do you guys ever wonder why you only have 2 choice of ISP around you? you may a few different ISP providing cable or DSL service in your area but I can gauranteed you the DSL line is provided by the same parent company and its the same with cable service.  e.g. You'll never see optimun online coexist with timer warner(aka earthlink, roadrunner) in the same area.  If you call in and ask why one is not offer in your area their answer is very simple.  We'll not offer service in your area because there is already a cable service in your area or dsl service.  This way they can control the price and force it down your throat.

This is how it is in Canada.  There's only two companies that everyone can wholesale from.

20mbps dsl for 30€ here.. :<

I'm a Foreigner, and as such, i am grateful for everyone pointing out any mistakes in my english posted above - only this way i'll be able to improve. thank you!

I moved to usa from the UK and was shocked at how bad the internet was here, its not the best in the UK but its still better than here. The one thing over here that is far worse value than the UK is cell phones.

I have never seen such crazy high prices for contracts, and if you dont have a contract that gives unlimited minutes you pay for not only calls you make but calls you recive. I mean WTH someone calls you and not only do they have to pay but you will have to pay too. Same for text messages, its crazy. Pay more per month, pay more for the phone and pay not only to make calls but to recive them as well.

And if you get a non contract phone and dont top up for a month you lose all your credit and they cut your service, whatever you do you cant win.

Reading through the thread and... WHAT THE FUCK?!

It depends on the company in the US, but yes. You either must have a contract and pay some monthly rate (starting at $40/month for limited minutes), or you can get what many refer to as "Go phones" (though Go is just one of the brands of them) which don't have a contract, but, depending on the company, you have to put a value card on the phone either every 1 or 3 months. I believe Tracfone has a card that lasts a year, but it's the same price as 4 of the 3 month cards... -_- And yes, if you're a day late, you're cut off, and have to also pay the reactivation fee... and hope your number is still availiable. The cheapest rate on these is a $25 card that lasts for 3 months (or 120 minutes of use), but it comes with a $100 activation fee.

...and people wonder why I don't have nor want a cell phone...

USA is awesome.

Here I'm paying $70 for a 2mbit / 300kbits connection.

But starting next month I will pay the same amount for: 10mbit / 800kbit (yeah upload speeds sucks).

Dang. We have 'Pay as you Go', you can add from £5 to however much you want to your credit whenver you want.  The services usually offer incentives such as free texts, minutes or even prizes for buying more credit at a time.  You never get 'cut off' for purchase inactivity though, that's insane.

Ha! you should see the "pay as you go" rate in HK, 10 cent Hong Kong currency to call international atleast to the U.S. , and they usually only deduct $2 HKD every month from the remaining balance to keep it activate until the account balance is depleted.

10 cent HKD = like 1.4 cent USD.

we have been getting more competition lately and in australia the two big players Telestar and singtel(optus) have been competting in an price war that has seen data caps rise and prices drop dramatically which is great now because i am paying 20 dollars less but gettting double more. That were your competition might be falling on and not going in an agressive price war.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

It has some pretty good deals if you live in the right place (aka heavily populated areas) So i'm pretty happy with my ISP.

But my friend lives in a small town and he has to pay $50 just for 750KB/s down and 250KB/s up which is just ridiculously violent.
