Just another example of how USA just keeps getting worse. Why America WHY???

And yes internet is way too expensive and slow compared to other countries. Lack of competition is strangling us, plus the government won't spend the money to at least get internet to people despite the obvious need for it.

It isn't the government's job to give people internet.  Also, people don't need internet.  This is at least true in the US.  Maybe you live or have been somewhere where one of the reasons the government exists is to give internet to people.  In the US, it's the job of people and private companies to work together to get internet.

Face it or not, the internet is becoming a needed part of today. There is so much information on the internet and many jobs use the internet more and more. People need the internet more and more to be a competing country. Saying we don't need it makes us less competitive in the world market, and right now the US needs to be competitive as we are falling behind in virtually everywhere.

Also, internet obviously isn't everywhere it needs to be, the government could at least set up some infrastructure as I think up to half americans don't even have it.

The US is falling behind because the government is too larger with too many rules and laws.  Additionally, it has too much debt from too much spending.  The solution is to remove many of the laws and cut the spending, not do the exact opposite and make things worse.

Spending on things we need like for say internet and instead cutting off other things mean we don't have to raise the amount of spending to get some infrastructure. It only means we have to spend our money better.

We don't need the internet. All we NEED is food, water, and shelter. Also, internet is private business that just needs net neutrality regulations that make it so the government can't do things like Egypt.

Other than getting itself out of debt, the US needs to boost its real infrastructure. Meaning, of course, the highway, railway, and power grid systems.

I do agree there are more important infrastructure needs than the internet. However ignoring the internet and not embracing that it will be the future of jobs, sales, etc is stupid. The US needs to put in some infrastructure for it or it will fall behind in the world market as the same for the others. The priority might not favor the internet, but it is a growing and important part that needs to be brought to better standards.

The definition of need on a pure survival basis of hunting and gathering that definition would be correct. However today, to survive, people need jobs to get that food, water, and shelter. The internet is an important medium that is growing which will allow these people to get jobs. The internet as a need is there, and should not be ignored as such.

You don't need super fast internet to fill out an online applications. An improved highway system would make getting to job interviewers and work easier and more efficient.

Thats why I said internet wouldn't be the top priority, especially right now when the US infrastructure is in shambles.

At the very least, we don't have AU's caps.

Yes and your internet isn't as slow as shit and labelled 'the worst infrastructure in a developed nation' by pundits.

I WISH we had something approaching what the US has in AU.

Wait, AU is considered worse than US? Wow that's surprising.

We're ranked like 40 ish, US is in the 30. We ARE suppose to get this cool new fiber-optic network that will bring us to the top of the world but the government who promise this didn't provide enough fund and now they're all arguing how to do it while the budget gets smaller and smaller.

That doesn't sound too different from what we have:

Plans that won't get followed through

Budget gets smaller until it falls into oblivion

eventually fails

Although in the long run I think AU will have it better anyway:

Actually has a plan that would bring acceptable speeds (Under 1mbs definition sucks for us)

Actually has a plan that has potential to catch up with the rest of the world

As my friends say here: [United States] Congress, it's the opposite of progress.

That's enough rambling from me though, I could complain about government all day long. I guess its comforting to know that other countries people feel the same way about the government lol

currently we are on 40 billion dollars budget for the Internet and the plan has already gone live for some places in Tasmania (all the places in the world tasmania has some kick ass internet speeds).

but with all the floods and cyclone that going to need 10-20 billion and the government hell bent on making an profit the plan doesn't have an good chance of getting anywhere

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

I pay 70 a month for "broadband" ha ha. The fastest I have ever gotten from this company was 100k. My cap is 200mb a day after that they cut you off literally. Your banned from there internet for twenty four hours and your connection gets throttled down to five kilobytes a second. That's twenty four consecutive hours the more you keep trying to use it after it started being throttled the longer the shit last. So basically I get "broadband" for about twenty minutes a day at the most. Long enough to do my homework go on youtube and check my email. When I first got this isp I did not know they throttled this badly I was trying to update my computer it screwed up one of the updates so I could not even use my computer for a couple of days. I called them the next day they told my to update my computer at midnight. I told them to go fuck a porcupine and then die. Fucking assholes.

I got faster speeds (340k used to be 720kb, no cap) then that with my internet on my cellphone.. for 10 euros.. >_>

YOU sir are now my enemy. I actually hate someone on the internet. Why you make me upset Mr. Nikkom for my dial up internet that they call broadband. Then you don't even compare it to your computer internetzzz you compare it to your cellphone data plan. now if you excuse me you made me too depressed to chat right now. Now I have to go pick on someone smaller than me to make me feel better (looks at dog.) Come here Butters good Butters "STUPID F***ING BUTTERS BAD F***ING BUTTERS IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT, WHYYYY, WHYYY, I LUVZ UZ. Butters says Woofz?

America isn't that bad. Australia costs more and has caps.

I pay $99.95 a month for 400gb data 24mbit ADSL2 , which syncs at 15mbit anyway.

I moved to usa from the UK and was shocked at how bad the internet was here, its not the best in the UK but its still better than here. The one thing over here that is far worse value than the UK is cell phones.

I have never seen such crazy high prices for contracts, and if you dont have a contract that gives unlimited minutes you pay for not only calls you make but calls you recive. I mean WTH someone calls you and not only do they have to pay but you will have to pay too. Same for text messages, its crazy. Pay more per month, pay more for the phone and pay not only to make calls but to recive them as well.

And if you get a non contract phone and dont top up for a month you lose all your credit and they cut your service, whatever you do you cant win.

Reading through the thread and... WHAT THE FUCK?!

i pay 70 for 50 gb and 20 mbps but i end up with 4mbps. And i got an new adsl2 rounter. An new adsl2 filter but i am still losing that 16 mbps. I dont even reach the 10 mbps average. Well i live in an old suburb

It's really pointless to get a massive mbps when the gb cap will stop you from using it after the first week.

wow after reading all these discussions, only one person actually know whats going on and why price is so high. Its called Monopoly,  You really need to look closely around you, all telecoms are monopoly in a way.  I forgot the correct rephrase to use, its a differen't form of monopoly.  Do you guys ever wonder why you only have 2 choice of ISP around you? you may a few different ISP providing cable or DSL service in your area but I can gauranteed you the DSL line is provided by the same parent company and its the same with cable service.  e.g. You'll never see optimun online coexist with timer warner(aka earthlink, roadrunner) in the same area.  If you call in and ask why one is not offer in your area their answer is very simple.  We'll not offer service in your area because there is already a cable service in your area or dsl service.  This way they can control the price and force it down your throat.

That's because USA are not densely populated enough compared to other countries, it must be expansive the ISPs... Japan and Korea are very densely populated and no wonder they can afford better Internet speeds for less. In France we have 30 megs/s for 30 €/mo., we rank 3rd after Korea and Japan for Internet quality.
