Maybe some games from that era were hard, but those games weren't the platformers on which all you had to do was to remember the levels.

Yes. These games were, well, Contra, Mega Man, Super Mario Bros. 2, Final Fantasy, Ogre Battle, to name a few

I have to disagree with that. I could not call that era and especially those games golden even if I was paid to. :P
90% completion of GTA San Andreas is pretty hardcore for me
