You know, I was wondering if James Cameronwas still going to make a BATTLE ANGEL ALITAmovie. With AVATAR being the biggest movie ever, I figured he was significantly preoccupied, but it turns out the king of the world's still keen on realizing this tale of post-Apocapyptic, cyberpunk ass-kicking.
Collider caught up with Cameron while he was promoting SANCTUM, the thriller he just recently produced, and the man thusly intoned…
“I’m obviously going to be pretty busy for the next five years [with Avatar 2 and 3]. And so I had to consider, do I hand this project off to another director? And then I thought, ‘No, I love it too much.'"
And here's what he said to say regarding his approach to the material...
"It’s such a rich world. What I’m going to do is take the spine story and use elements from the first four books. So, the Motorball from books three and four, and parts of the story of one and two will all be in the movie.”
Oddly enough, I remember him describing AVATAR as merely a “test run” for the tech he wanted to eventually use on BATTLE ANGEL. I wasn’t as hot or cold on that tale of outer space environmentalism as most were, but my mind balks trying to picture what that massive spectacle could’ve been a try-out for. It did sound like BATTLE ANGEL would’ve been rendered entirely in the mo-cap process that was limited to just the Na’vi in AVATAR. And it could work, honestly. I think we can safely say that VFX artists have finally crossed the treacherous "uncanny valley" that's so dogged animators over the years.
Would you Anime Vice lunatics want to see this, though? It sounds like Cameron’s a genuine fan, but I think this project will ultimately be a casualty of him spreading himself too thin. Keep in mind, too, that these talks are about a project that’d be a much different level than the proposed DEATH NOTE andEVANGELION Hollywood adaptations. This is arguably the biggest filmmaker on Earth we're talking about.
