Forums - Sony Discussion - So will the NGP have at least some kind of PSP backwards compatibility?

dont really know why people want to buy new consoles to play their older games.

Because good games (or just that a particular person likes, so they are good for him) don't stop being good when a new system arrives, so people may want to keep on playing the ones they bought. Now, for home consoles it's just matter of a lesser convenience issue, having less devices and cables around, but also a greater one, not depending on an old device, possibly out of warranty and/or not produced anymore, so BC may make them feel a lot safer and comfortable. For portables, though, these reason not only apply, but also the convenience one becomes a major one, people don't want to carry around TWO portables to play a selection of their new and old games.

Anyway, as external UMD ripping devices would risk increasing piracy, so Sony could be very wary of them, it could just include an internal UMD drive in some premium models (that this way would need higher capacity batteries and could maybe need to be bulkier too, though).

I think that playing old games on the new console is good, and a welcome feature, but what I was trying to say is that it's not a must for Sony (or Nintendo). I I buy a game for PSP, if it works on the PSP then that's it. Everything else is an extra, not a must.

I think Sony will only allow PS Store copies to run on the NGP because of piracy. They could come out with a way of registering your UMD games on the store so you can download them normally, but they would need a serial number or something unique to your UMD copy of the game, so they could prevent that UMD copy to be registered again, and I don't know if they will bother. It would be great, but I still think it's not a must.

Sony is re-releasing PSP games in the PSP2 gamecards.

So, you just have to rebuy your PSP library.

This. I just don't get it. It feels like its just for them to complain about something.

that,

It's like buying a dvd player just to play your VHS collection.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

They will most probably just be digital downloads as 'PSP Classics' or something.

Hmmm.... I wonder is Playstation 2 games could be played on the NGP???

Not going to be an issue, since the PSP is supposed to have no gam3z.

DVDs ended up costing less than VHS, so upgrading wasn't a problem.

If they offered PSP games at a reasonable price, plus moving your saves, I wouldn't mind as much, as it would follow the Virtual Console and PSOne Classics model of older games at lower prices.

My comment was more to do with the advancement of technology but still refusing to move on and embrace it.

Well I'm on the convenience issue, which, as mentioned by another poster, goes double for handhelds over home devices.

I guess the reason I don't see this as a big issue is because I only use my psp for short journeys and take the one game I plan to be playing for a while, in this case: FFT wotl. I chose it because it will last me a while and I can get home and pick something else.

But at the same time...once I get games for the psp2, I doubt I'll really go back to my psp1 games. I said I would go back and play ps2 games once I got a ps3...after Persona 4...I haven't touched my ps2 in over a year. Why? Because my ps3 has more games than I know what to do with. I occasionally buy psOne classic. I play them for a couple of days and then go back to my ps3 games, why? Because the novelty wears off rapidily.

Also, you get to remind yourself just how awful some games really were. e.g Syphon Filter 1 I remember playing that and think that game was the shit, I got it free from psnplus, played it for about 2hrs and realised how annoying that game was, controls are REALLY bad, dialog is bad, voice acting is worse. So screw BC and progress onwards and upwards!
