Forums - Sales Discussion - Wii outselling PS3 this week in UK

Nintendo has told GamesIndustry.biz that Easter gift buying and a rise in the number of Wii units shipped to retail contributed to 25,000 units being sold in the UK last week.

Leaked Chart-Track figures showed that 17,000 PlayStation 3 units were shifted during the same period.

It is possible .

But I wouldnt treat this as "fact " ,for a start the PS3 number  is through leaked information ,we dont know is it is reliable at all .

Second Nintendo can be making its numbers seem more positive (for example making the calculations not after natural week but after 7 days in holidays etc ) .

In any case if the PS3 number is correct they have sold at least  172K+30K +17K ....so they have surpassed already the 220K machines sold .

Actually, 172+30+17=219, and the 172 number was from Sony, Chart Track had them at 165 for the first weekend. But they should be close to having sold almost all of their first shipment now in the UK. However, if sales are down from 30k to 17k in a holiday week I wouldn't be surprised if soon they'll drop down a lot more, maybe even under 10k per week.

Not that hard to believe as wiis are still sold out and ps3s didn't even sell out on launch day. It was also said the demand for ps3s went down over 80% after the first week. The only thing holding the wiis sales back at the moment is the number that nintendo can ship.

If the Wii sold 25,000 in 1 week in the UK, that would mean 100,000+ in the entire Europe region, wich translates into around 400-500 thousand units for the month. Makeing Europe the biggest nintendo market. That also means nintendo is makeing well over 1.2million/month A supriing 400,000 33% increase from last month.

I thought all of Europe (including the UK) was estimated at being 2.5 times the size of the UK market alone? Also there is nothing saying that sales in the UK would be similar to sales outside of the UK.

Well Nintendo is upping production so maybe we are seeing some of that already. Or maybe some NA Wiis did go to Europe after all.

You also have to take into consideration that nintendo was probably holding onto units in the month of march since they meet their sales goal of 6 million sold world wide. This will allow them to start the new fiscal year strong and have wiis available for the launch of super paper mario.

Makes you think about the NA numbers, how many Wii's where bought as Easter gifts?

Side Note - The only cool thing I ever got for Easter was a Hamster... which I later lost in a hotel...

That's right, except this week would be a one-off - extra shipments, etc. Maybe only 10k Wii's sold on other weeks. So the total monthly sales for Europe would be closer to 250k I would say (or lower).
