I agree about it being a statistical tie. I was wondering though, as far as these statistics go, what would the difference have to be before one could be declared a clear winner? I'm thinking 15k but what do y'all think?

I'd say more than 3%. Most political election polls say they can have up to 3% error.

Interesting to see if you look at the same Americas week last year PS3 was actually ahead of 360. Yoy PS3 is down by about 10k which isn't all that bad.

But you have to wonder how it will be 3 months or so from now when we get to the graveyard period. Games wise i see nothing on the radar that will change its down turn in US. They played the slim and they done the Move cards. Only thing now that will help it compete with 360 in US is if it gets a price cut.

Uhh... Kind of a moot point anyway considering It's pretty much a certainty that all 3 will be getting price cuts this year. But as I pointed out in the past what happened with DS last year should give an indication of how things will play out on that front. Price cuts simply aren't as effective when you're already at a mass market price.

Those PS3 numbers in the states...it's the one missing key from ensuring second place in weekly sales.

Still, overall it's a tie, and I'm happy for every console.

What could Sony do?? they dont have half a billion to spend like Microsoft did. at least PS3 is competively doing well despite the price and marketing advantages of the other 2 home consoles.

So now Sony is the little company that could?

Gotta love it!

While I know that comment wasn't aimed at me (I hope at least ), I'm not sure I understood what you meant.

He's saying that it's great that Sony went from making so many mistakes with the PS3 and beling plagued by bad press when the PS3 was first launched to being most successful 3rd place console in console history with software support that rivals if not exceed its competitors.  Very logical and reasonable.

Even though I'm sure you're being sarcastic I wanted to point out that's exactly not what I meant.

Sony's poor decisions this gen are in no way related to Microsoft marketing budgets.

Going from 1st to 3rd in one generation is not success no matter how much you want to spin it.

I agree.  The PS3 has always been in third this entire gen world wide.  But it is quite impresive that it's been outselling the Xbox 360 for the past two years in a roll now despite the Xbox 360's year head start.  Microsoft really had to pull out all the stop in 2010 (Halo Reach, slim model, Kinect) to really keep up.  It might not have surpassed the PS3 last year, but they were closer than the year before.

Can you recall what happened 2 years ago that finally caused the PS3 to start outselling the Xbox?

Hint: Slim model & price cut

A slim model that was still more expensive than the 360, it was also to do with Uncharted 2 being game of the year, that game has put PS3 on the map this gen no doubt. Microsoft had used everything in their arsenal, Halo, new slim model, and Kinect, and still the PS3 is meeting them WW, and beating them in certain regions. if we go back a bit further than 2 years, PS3 was still competing comparatively well, despite the higher price and the poor launch.

Oh, one more thing:

Dance Central 1,540,000
Kinect userbase 7,766,015

compared to

Rock Band 3 1,090,000
360/PS3/Wii/DS combined userbase
328,088,240

Not exactly the most fair comparison, considering the Kinect litterally has like 3 good games, while 360.PS3/Wii/DS together have 100s of great games. Also, the Rock Band series is starting to be overmilked like Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk, and soon to be Call of Duty series.

Well it depends doesn't it. The 360 won't get a price cut while it is still like 30% up year over year. It also won't get a price cut if MS can't sort out the supply issues. By accounts the problem isn't selling them, it is getting the consoles to the shops to be sold. Once that has been sorted and we get through the first 2 quarters i think we will be in a better position to guess if the 360 needs a price cut or not. It has been 3 years since the last one pretty much so i don't think they will do it simply because its been a longtime. In Japan i imagine it will get a small cut but i honestly don't think MS care as much for Japan as they once did. I am sure they realise without making massive franchises exclusive the 360 won't be pushing PS3/Wii numbers.

In EMEAA the numbers between the PS3 and 360 are pretty close right now. Again that does not indicate it needs a price cut there. Especially if it is up yoy 30% . Where as PS3 needs a price cut to compete in US as i said. It is down yoy. getting to the point where it is almost outsold 2-1 by 360 each week.

So i think we will see a PS3 price cut in US for sure this year. In Japan it is doing pretty well, don't think it needs it there. Same goes for EMEAA. It is doing very well.

Wii i think will get one for sure in all regions as it has been falling for sometime. It could actually start being 3rd in weekly sales more often.

That's right!  I have one.  It's cool.

DC is just wooow, a kinect mover

The Wii stays ahead of the other main consoles by the virtue of the fact it sells reasonably in all 3 regions whilst the others sort of specialise.
