how many of us remembers our 'friend code" right off the top of my head?

You never had one ;)

Do you remember your phone number? Your cell number? Uhhhhh... it's reallyyyyy hard...

My cell number is 027 (carrier) xxx5419 or 7 digits plus one of 3 carrier identifiers. A friend code is 12 digits long. Most people can only reasonably remember 7 digits which is why the phone numbers are only typically around that long.

American cell phone numbers are usually ten digits with the area code, sometimes with an extra number in front for dialing really long distances. I don't think it's too much to memorize 12 digits, and codes will most likely be exchanged over the internet where it's always on hand, so I don't see it as too big of a deal.

Though I rather have my own unigue created user ID, having to input only one set of numbers for each friend is still better than before :).

Except you memorise the phone number whilst the other prefix numbers are standardised. It would be completely different if everyone was just given random 12 digit numbers. Lastly they are easier to manage if they are shorter, if you have a short number you could simply remember it and enter it. If its a longer number you have to write it down somewhere.

This is great news.  I'm totally fine with this improvement!

I agree with Kylie. It is better but I was hoping for something really way better. If the hardware can be improved to justify a whole new gen, why isn't it the same with the online network?

Not trolling here, its just that I'm sick of friend codes already. It is ok in the DS and Wii, but not in the next Nintendo platforms. My hope for 3DS is lost though. I hope Wii 2 comes with loaded guns for online gameplay. Free of charge too, please.

Think about it, in 8 years we will still be using friend codes, imagine what PSN and XBL will be like by then.

I don't mind the use of friend codes at all. Having a set of numbers or a random nickname full of letters and other characters, for me its the same.

What is not the same is that you cannot add random people you meet online, you cannot see their profiles, you cannot chat with them, you can't shit! You need to know who you're adding physically or thourhg internet, and that just cuts the experience of online community. Not that matters too much to me, I never add anyone nor speak through the mic on Live, but in some games, you just need it.

Why not just save it on your mobile as an extra number? You can have home, cell and 3DS :P

lol Universal IDs better than friend names?

Fanboys...

I don't think anybody is arguing that a UID is better than a username. We're just so damn happy that we won't be expected to enter in a 12 digit code for every. goddamn. friend. and every. goddamn. game.

It's a big leap in usability terms, even if it could have gone a little farther.

Actually they are, because they'll allow non-unique handles.  If your name is "John", your name can actually be "John" on your friends list.

Pretty sure your Mii will be tied to it too.

But yeah, this universal FC is nice (would have liked to be known as Smeags, but 1143232202 isn't bad either. ) and it'll be great to just enter a friend's number once, and be done with it.

If it's anything like the current Friend Code system, you'll be able to give your friends nicknames.  So on their system you won't be 1143-2322-0202, but "Smeags."  Or perhaps something less flattering, depending on the friend... >_>

Anyways, this is good to hear.

That just made it better than all other services. No longer will I have to see my crappy friends name that contains x in the beginning of the sentence and x at the end for example xNoname2200x. (Sorry Noname if I butchered you nickname)

Hmm thank god I don't know any xXxSasukexXx or people like that...or I would be beyond annoyed.
