Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Super Smash Bros. Brawl missed higher sales opportunity

I surmise that Brawl would have sold millions of more copies if it had a robust (such as online rankings and more online options) and much better working online (as opposed to the incessant lag). Sadly, Nintendo underestimated how online gaming is important for games sales this generation. For a game like Brawl, which can be played at a high level competitively, online fits well with its type of gameplay and it could have done wonders for it sales wise. It would have been a much better investment if it had better online. I wouldn't doubt at least a million more sales if it had a better online. Well, at least Nintendo got Mario Kart Wii's online right. I wouldn't doubt its robust online didn't factor in with at least 5% of its sales. Which by the way is over 1 million.

No Nintendo forgot to add Wii to the end.

'Super Smash Bros Brawl Wii'

Such a missed opportunity from their part.

They also forgot to advertise it more along with a blue Wii bundle.

They need to release new commercials advertising Brawl. I know many who play the flash version at school and yet know little about Brawl. I was like WTF? I didn't even see any Brawl commercials. I knew about Brawl throught the internet. Super Smash is one of those series that can get a huge loyal fanbase like Call of Duty, GTA, etc.

SSBB could of sold (if Nintendo did what I posted above)) near 20 million copies worldwide.

If the game had a robust online with leaderboards i would have kept my WII. However, that is not the case.

Gotta have something to look forward too for the new SSB

I don't get peoples problem with Brawl's online, I've played it for 20 hours and I can't remember experiencing lag more than maybe once or twice.

on topic, I think Nintendo should continue to advertise Brawl.  They did a good job initially with the Redknapps, but they haven't aired any recently.

Every time I play it I get lag but that's if I can even get an online match these days.

I don't think Wii even has a million people playing games online. I'm sure millions of people connect their console to the internet. I just don't think they're playing online games. I highly doubt your suggestion would have helped sales much.

Going with what dany612 said... the title was the problem.

It would have sold significantly better had it been called "Wii New Super Mario Smash Wii Fit Party." They could have added Returns to the sequel.

When did you go online? I bought the game day one and brought it online before doing anything else. I was so excited to play it online. However it lagged and glitched mutliple times and the loading before matches was absolutely horrible. I remember others complaining online about how crappy the gameplay was.

Now I stopped playing it online after like 2-3 days and resorted to only playing with friends locally. I guess the servers were probubly over loaded and since it was right at launch they probubly had some other problems. But it definatly did not make a good selling point for their to be so many problems.

In the next SmashBros I expect up to 8 players , tons more playable and a cool ranking and battle system. Also I expect Nintendo to make sure the online service runs at 100% day one, no glitches no lag. Nintendo needs to better implement Smash Bros online. Also different online modes would be cool to.

I mean maybe a hot potatoe game where you hit someone to pass the potatoe on before it blows. Or how about a hold onto the flag game where one player gets a flag that they loose if hit, the person with the flag the longest wins. Or how about Team Brawl online or maybe online story mode co-op. Nintendo could really make the next SmashBros the best online game on the market, step aside Master Chief Mario and friends are gonna kick your ass.

I went online fairly regularly in the 3 or 4 months following the European launch (June 2008).  I can honestly say honestly saw that I experienced lag rarely.  On the subject of the Wii's online games, I've also never experienced lag on Monster Hunter, Tatsunoko vs Capcom or Mario Kart Wii either.  I haven't really found any lag on any of my online DS games either I play regularly (Mario Kart DS, Pokemon and MP Hunters)

My download speed is 10.6mb per second, which I now is above the national average.  Maybe that contributed?
