Forums - Sales Discussion - NPD: DS Officialy best selling console in the US

Yes we know that, but the final numbers shows a quite big difference etween the DS and the beloved PS2. The king is dead, LONG LIVE THE KING!!!!!

Thanks to the extraordinary numbers in December, the Nintendo DS has become the most ever sold in the United States. La console portatile della casa giapponese, ha infatti superato le 47 milioni di unità vendute, mettendosi dietro anche la PlayStation 2 , che deteneva il precedente record con 45 milioni. The handheld console of the Japanese, has exceeded 47 million units sold, putting behind even the PlayStation 2, which held the previous record by 45 million. Il resto della classifica, vede un Wii vicino al sorpasso sul vecchio Game Boy Advance, mentre la PS3 passa avanti alla vecchia Xbox , raggiungendo il traguardo di 15 milioni di console vendute. The rest of the league, sees a Wii close to overtaking the old Game Boy Advance, while the PS3 ahead of the old Xbox, reaching the milestone of 15 million consoles sold.

Can't be long now until it's officially the best selling console of all time.

When the next Shipment numbers come in?

Sometime soon, that's for sure.

That list is misleading, it's missing some consoles.

When did NPD start? Looks like this only counts Gen 6 & 7

Edit - I updated my post for you.

@Seece Sega Genisis?

Also, nice job DS.

Pixel Art can be fun.

Thanks Seece.

No proof of this but I would suspect PS1 and Sega Genesis will be less USA focused as the old Nintendo consoles.... Sony is and was a much wider reaching company and was able to push gaming into countries that previously had to import (even more so with PS2) while I believe the Genesis was launched in South America too.

So while the current estimate for USA vs. Americas is about 0.87... back for the NES for all I know it might have only been shipped to USA by Nintendo, and only able to leak into Canadian retail, probably 0.95 of Americas NES sales were USA.

Two down, one to go.

Wii probably only ever had one to go, but... where is PS2 at in EMEAA again? If you add like 3.5m to that, we'll probably have its lifetime sales there. DS is gonna get there easily, but I wanna see if Wii can compare in my wildest dreams.

Genesis, N64 and GameCube are definitely below the historical NPD data I remember seeing.  iirc Genesis/N64 were both around 19-20m and GC was around 14m.  I actually remember NPD data having N64 ahead of SNES, which was pretty shocking.

As an aside, Genesis figures are notoriously tough to track, due in large part to the various expanded (CDX, Nomad, etc) and licensed (Majesco, JVC, etc) models out there.  Sega's official figures (29m) only account for the two regular MD/Genesis models they produced, but I've seen estimates that go up to 40m for Genesis factoring in every possible variant.
