I thought it was on the list of banned books in the USA? I read it much earlier, but it was one of the books we had to read along with Orwell books. (among others that year)

That is a lone publisher taking an out-of-copyright work and changing it because they want to do so.

Is it dumb? Yes, incredibly, if only because they're not bright enough to realize that Twain was using the word to push a social message, not because of any kind of in-built racism. His decision was very, very intentional.

Still, that's a far cry from a country banning a song from radio.

There is no such thing as a banned books list in the USA. Individual fuckwits on a district level can choose to not teach certain books or carry them in libraries but there is nothing on the national level.

I don't think the USA has banned books... Either way I'm 29 so it's not like this was recent.

Oddly in the advanced reading group we were reading some Sci-Fi book about robots taking over the jobs more and more, and it forcing most people who didn't get good grades to be unemployed and live off government welfare with nothing to really look foward too in life... except drugs and then a strange VR game which was really a covert government program to train people to be sent to other planets to colonize.  Because apparently sending the unemployed to different planets is the best way to colonize/reduce population.

I think they might of let us pick and that explains the weird choice.

Strange book indeed, and they say the unemployed or the poor breed more (generalized statement), so that would be an effective strategy. 

"The King's Speech", a movie involving no violence of any kind, no nudity or sexual inuendo of any kind, is rated R in the states for 11 uses of the F word. The word is said 11 times in a learning environment, with no ill intent meant towards anyone else, the guy is just trying to get words out of his mouth to practice vocal exercies to get rid of his stutter. This is bullshit. Oh, and it's PG13 in Canada.

Not saying this makes Canada any less wrong for banning this song, but seriously, rated R! WTF!

If you don't understand the film rating system in America, take a number and get in line.

Read up on Stone and Parker's take on the MPAA rating system when they made the South Park film. It's hilarious. Every time the film was rejected as being too obscene for even an R rating, they would turn around and make it WORSE. Eventually, the film was approved for an R rating. No one really understood why.

Really, sometimes PC stuff can be away more insulting than whatever they're censoring.
