Forums - General Discussion - Canada is at it again, bans Dire Straights from radio

http://reason.com/blog/2011/01/13/canada-bans-dire-straits-money

America has its problems but damn, I'm glad this ain't one of them.

Apparently no one in Canada is able to discern the difference between the use of a word to instill hatred and the use of a word for IRONICAL purposes, which is how the word "faggot" is used in "Money for Nothing".

On the other hand, it's refreshing to see that America hasn't cornered the market on stupid.

I was like what did Canada do this time, and than I was disappointed to hear that this was it. Also I love you say no one in Canada, like all of Canada payed attention to the song.

Since it seems I am one sided: CBSC has made a lot of stupid decisions in the past, because simply they think be their actions results in everyone being satisfied. Good thing they don't control the contents of books, or maybe we would have words removed out of our books.

lo, pretty funny.

I am pretty sure that most people in US would wish this was one of the problems they were having instead of...Sarah Pailin for example.

This is why shit like the Fairness Doctrine - a pause here while I spit on its grave - is so poisonous. It's the infantilzation of the citizenry.

Could be the most PC country on earth. I love Canada only 1 hour from the boarder. But this crazy.

Sarah Palin will someday go away. The continued trampling of free speech will not.

I'd hate to see what those morons would do to Mark Twain's catalog of novels.

This is so bloody dumb that I can't even wrap my head around it.

The problem is what another user described is our attempt to be PC, and that does ruin it for us. The main problem and really the main great things about Canada, is that we are always trying not to offend anyone.

I wouldn't call this a violation of free speech..I can still say "faggot" out loud if the situation calls for it..without getting arrested. And I can still play Dire straits on my MP3 player.

Its more like a fail in political correctness if anything.
