Forums - Sales Discussion - Will the PS3 and 360 gap grow or close in 2011?

It will grow on VGC, and then when SOny releases numbers will shrink, then grow againa t the holidays. Same story, different year

In the current state of games being released, I havent heard of many exclusive games thatll greatly help support 360 and the Kinect other than Gears 3 and Forza 4.  So Ill have to choose PS3, but thats just how I see it.

Can anybody tell me any big game that'll support Kinect?  Ill feel sad for those that bought Kinect if MS doesnt support them greatly since its so successful.  PS Move isnt as successful but its getting KZ3 so i'd hope MS would back up Kinect in that sort of way.

First off I think if anyone is going to cut their price Sony will do it first, just looking at the situation they are in makes that pretty clear and I think the gap will grow for the first quarter of the year than begin to shrink again as the year progresses. In the end I see the gap being 3.5 million by the end of the year. But could be wrong about the gap increasing, in fact PS3 outsold 360 this week, we'll see how things pan out.

I don't think Sony wants to do a price cut because that would most likely bring them back into the red for each unit sold. So unless the 360 gets one first I'm sure Sony wants to drag out its current price tag for as long as it can.

As you mentioned, PS3 outsold the 360 this week. If 360 isn't dominating the PS3 in sales then there is no real need for Sony to reduce the price first.

True, no need to cut prices until Autumn for any competitor, its initial effect would be wasted. Instead, IMVHO, Sony just need to do a relaunch of GT5 for Golden Week in Japan and for Easter in USA and push Move more everywhere, game launches in large numbers through the year will keep sales quite fine, so it's just those two big guns that need a little more gunpowder. And WW gap is small enough now, no need to attack MS at profits cost, preventing it to get large again should be enough, shrinking it in America is plain utopia.

Well, if the Jan. 8th numbers are anything to go off of, the gap will surely shrink.  The PS3 is ahead of the 360 and Japan's numbers aren't out, yet.

And to people who think the gap will remain flat if the PS3 has a pricecut, really?  Any similar pricecut that both the PS3 and the 360 recieve will definitely go in the PS3's favor.  The 360 already has a $199 model and the PS3 was still able to outsell it in '10 with an entry price of $299.  I fully expect the PS3 and 360 Elite to see a $50 cut this year, but PS3 will see the largest bump from this.

Today's numbers show that you're right :)   I think someone should do a forum on how the name "XBOX 360"  is not a name that apeals to women and children...

Shortages are only going to last till end of Feb. So 8th Jan isn't a good representative of future sales AT all tbh ..

360 is having shortages (YAY finally get to use that execuse, lawl) so I think the gap will shrink then go back up again before fall/winter hits. It's going to be all about the holiday season where I think Kinect will succeed again.

6 million gap by the end of 2011 unless Sony cut the price.

It's just that simple.

Oh they're just lying about shortages like Sony did last year.

Seriously though, we'll see how well they rebound after shortages end.  Personally, I don't think it's going to be enough to raise the gap that much.  Plus, I'm sure Sony are going to drop the price of the PS3 around E3 this year, which may just negate any gains the 360 has made up to that point.
