Will the PS3 and 360 gap grow or close in 2011?

Forums - Sales Discussion - Will the PS3 and 360 gap grow or close in 2011?

i dont get it shipment figures say the gap is ~ 2.9 million

but VG chartz sales figures says the gap is ~ 3.9 million.

shouldn't sales and shipment difference be roughly the same or at max like ~ 3.4 million

First month... January... GAP now 3.9m and decreasing.

And PS3 was a bit undertracked in Australia for 2010 (about 200k).

360 shortages took up to 400k off sales in January. It would have been the best selling system for 2011 YTD had there been no shortages.

Those shortages are clearly not in Japan or Europe. and its likely that the 360 will continue to slide into 2010 numbers in Europe before the launch of the slim and before Kinect was released. Europe seems to be following the Japanese trend we saw last year where the PS3 outsold the Wii for most weeks of the year.

not sure what will happen in the Americas, Wii is still strong there and Kinect is selling consoles, only time will tell if those numbers remain the same or go down.

Yea, but the shortages affect 360 sales in its strongest region, and were talking worldwide gap. 360 will probably slide in EMEAA, but PS3 will slide in Americas, so the Gap really wont change that much.

One thin of interest, it's likely PS3 will outsell in Wii in EMEAA and Japan this year if Wii sales continue to slide. 360 will also outsell the Wii in UK, and maybe even the US this year. Depends on how much Kinect boosts holiday sales, since Wii gets a lot of sales in the holiday season.

Shortages or not the GAP is decreasing... and will decreased more after adjustments.

I disagree, I'm noticing that the 360 is outselling the PS3 marginally now that shortages have been met. It's likely that PS3 and 360 sell a similar number of units during the year. If the Kinect boost wears off and PS3 sales remain strong, PS3 might get a small lead this year, but that will be offset by 360 having stronger holiday sales. I say this because I feel Kinect will boost 360 sales in a similar pattern to how Wii sells, which is with headstrong sales in the fall.

However your free to feel what you like. I've accuratly predicted 360's rise to leading sales, and I don't think you disagree with me when I say that Wii sales will be weaker then the HD consoles during the non holiday portion of 2011.

What? Are you kidding?

In 2011 PS3 outsold the 360 week by week... the first figure show 360 > PS3 but in the next week PS3 was adjusted UP and 360 DOWN turn arround PS3 > 360.

Wait until next week to see this week number changed like the previous week.

PS3 is leading 2011 by 100k or more.

Could be... in Australia PS3 is undertracked about 200k... so if any other country happen the same 3.4 million seem reasonable.

What? How do you not see that the 360 has been slowly creepying it's way to stronger sales now that the shortages have been met?

Did you already forget how 360 had 20% stronger sales then PS3 during the holidays post Kinect launch? The only reason PS3 caught up was because of 360 shortages, and Kinects more holiday oriented boost.

PS3 outselling 360 in January was due to large scale shortages, and PS3 only marginally beat 360 on the week LBP2 was released. Since then 360 has been ontop. I don't think sales between the HD consoles will be that different until at least E3 2011, you can't deny that. PS3 has shown no signs of seperating itself from 360 sales, and without any major software releases until E3, it won't.

Remember Killzone 3 is comming out the same time as Marvel vs. Capcom 3, which is looking like a much stronger selling game as of now, and other then that I don't see any spectacular exclusives on either 360 or PS3 until summer.

360 has seen massive shortages in the last few months, but having trouble meeting demands.

You shouldn't base your opinions on the sales gap between consoles by units shipped as there are many factors that cause this value to be very very misleading.

well xbox is still raping in the US, and its always very close to ps3's numbers, so even if there were shortages. it just seems very odd that there would be more than a million more ps3's on selves than xbox's

I was under the impressioned shipped numbers are more accurate then VG chartz, since VG chartz adjusts it's sales after shipped numbers come out

MS is selling inventory as retailers receive shipments. They are temporarily unable to stock up to regular inventory levels. Retailers are stocked up with the appropriate number of PS3's.

Remember, the 360 shortages, just ended, there hasn't been time for retailers to stock up 360 consoles. 360 outsold the PS3 from Sept-December by about 1 million units, it doesn't make sence for the shipped difference to only change by 0.08 million units.

VGC adjustments never exceed 1 million units, and they tend to happen during unexpected changes in the market. PS3 saw an adjustment post Move launch because Move pushed consoles a lot more then expected, and the same happened for 360.

If you really want extremely accurate data, wait for MS, Sony and Nintendo's Quarterly Press conferences. Last one was in September/October, new one happened a couple weeks ago, hence the adjustment to VGC data.

Look at the difference in the number of 360 games over 5 million sold compared to ps3.  Then check the difference in 4 million games sold on both systems.  That's why the 360 leads, it has more games people want to play.  Last Gen ps2 had more great games, that's why it dominated.  If Sony wants to catch them they need better games, making great games that nobody buys doesn't help sales.  Don't get me wrong, I'm glad MS made Alan Wake even though it doesn't sell, because I like playing the game, but Alan Wake isn't what sells systems, Halo is.  Sony needs a Halo.  Uncharted may be an amazing game, but nobody knows who Nathan Drake is.  Link and Mario are household names, and Master Chief is very recognizable.  That's the difference this Gen.  Also, having a system cost 500-600 at launch is just retarded from a sales standpoint.
