Forums - Sony Discussion - Glad I didn't buy it. DCU Online require 15GB?!

I could never get into an MMO. The annual cost per month was also a deterrent. Guess it just never changes, lol.

Everyone needs to play Lost Odyssey! Any opposition to this and I will have to just say, "If it's a fight you want, you got it!"

Well MMOs on consoles are retarded... there's little patch capability and there's definitely no little free expansion capability. Moreover you can't add your own mods and tools... which is one of the major factor for the developpment of the MMO itself. 90% of the WoW interface is stuff that was usermade at the begining.

some ps3s are 40gig... 15 is huge.

and i'm for an initial fee, otherwise there can be a loss for the dev... but they should increase the free months to 4 (then decrease when game price decreases... like early bird edition = 4 months... then 2, then 1 when it drops to 20$

oh and I keep on being stuck on something....

D2 an MMO????? what have you guys been smoking? it's as much an MMO as fable 2... you do interact with other players, but the game is based on single player and you definitely don't need online to play it.

MMO is MASSIVELY Multiplayer Online, online poker is more of an mmo...

Sorry, I might have been interested in DC Universe, but 15 GB download is worse than $15 for me. If it was HDD install it wouldn't have mattered that much.

Also, if it was free2play, I might have actually got it, or if it was free download pay-to-play.

No, I'm sorry, but people need to learn to read properly (This isn't aimed at you)

It isn' ta 15GB DOWNLOAD.

It's a 160MB DOWNLOAD, followed by an 11GB INSTALL (From the disc, takes an hour max), followed by another 2GB DOWNLOAD.

There's 2.16GB to download, and 11GB to install... I don't see why people bitch and moan about it.

Also as a note to people, I've bough ta 500GB HDD today, it'll be here tomorrow morning, can't wait, 60GB to 500GB is a huge leap, lol.

Thank you for clarifying.  This actually doesn't sound too bad.  I assume everyone is going to ingnore you, though.  People seem to have more fun complaining (myself included).

Doesn't seem that bad, I doubt the people with 20GB PS3's make up a huge proportion. That and not many PS3 games require installs anymore, so they probably have enough memory if they really like it.

thats true, but then again, an upgrade isnt that costly, and there are enough tutorial videos on youtube. so anyone could do it.

By the way the highest cost of a successfull MMO isn't the servers or the people needed to write the continual expansions.

It's actually the bandwidth cost for the game and the customer support costs ( Blizzard has over 500 ppls working on customer support just for the US and you don't want to know about their bandwith costs....).

The line coming out of the server building isn't your typical DSL line, at the level of Blizzard it's custom state of the art shit ( because the nerds really go crazy when their servers go down even a few minutes, I know I was one of them, typically if the server crash, players crash the forums a few minutes later by checking for updates and then all the gaming sites related to wow start to be real slow as the wow players start all surfing at the same time while waiting for the game to go back up...)

As for comparing with Free to play MMORPGS, lets take the example of LOTR online

They claim to have increased their revenue by a factor of 3 when they went free to play. Except guess how they make money ?

The game is free to play but they charge 15$ a month for VIP pass to get access to some of the more interesting content in the game. So much for free to play..................

bandwidth.. depending.. lol  bandwidth is more expensive for a free mmos than for pay to play, you download everything from a free mmo, with most pay mmos you get disks with most of the content.  once a player gets on the game bandwidth usage is significantly reduced.

as an example: blizzard spends like 50 million/year on upkeep (bandwidth, customer support, server maintenance)  for wow.  theyve been making about 100 million/month from wow.   their main cost is not upkeep, but then again i dont know if they release new content much anymore so they might just be banking all the money as theyve put the developers on new projects.

oh and btw, the patch is not 15 gb lol, the patch is like 2.5 gb ish, the rest is an install from disk, which, together with the patch comes pretty close to 15gb of hd space total

Bandwith costs aren't related to patches but to the running of the game itself ( constant connection by the players to the server)

again.. that depends lol.   if youre hosting a free game that is 10 gb, people download it for free, get level 6 and never play again.  that 10 gb is a lot more than the 100 (maybe) mb that they used while playing the game.

games like final fantasy 11 are designed to run on 56k modems and have huge patches.  eventually the amount of time you spend on the game will pass the bandwidth required to download the game, but lol, its gonna take a while

it all depends how you distribute your game, for example Wow patches are distributed through peer to peer so they actually consume very little bandwith for Blizzard ( they couldn't handle it any other way even if they wanted anyway, imagine 1 million ppls doing concurrent down of a 100 Mb patch..)

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

If this game can make me put 100 full 24h days into it like wow did than i might consider it. That's also why people play MMOs because of that much content. i forget if it was 100 i think it could have been 90 but i quit in april so memorys foggy.

the only problem with what you say is that the PS3 version should be the user friendly one... if you're gonna open up the thing and change stuff in it, might as well get the PC version... MMOs are, because of WoW, games for everyone, and that includes many housewives... I doubt this audience sees keenly to opening up a console, instaling software on it...

However the biggest fail is that the servers are not crossplatform from what I read...
