Forums - Sales Discussion - The DS family should be tracked seperately

First off, I realize this thread is probably going to met with excessive negativety and alot of you will probably disagree. I accept that and just thought I'd speak my mind.

Anyhow, I get pretty tired of see these "DS outsells this" "DS outsells that" and so on and so forth. And here's why:
As well all know, there are many different versions of the DS. The original DS, the DS Lite, and then another version of the Lite and soon to be 3DS and maybe a couple models in between that I missed. I feel the DS, Lite, and 3DS should all be tracked seperately, or at the very least be recognized as different animals.

"But wait Username2324, there are different versions of other consoles, those follow the same lines" Oh but they don't, for instance with the PS2 and the PS2 Slim you're not looking at upgraded hardware. It's the same hardware, slimmed down. Thats really the only change there's no performance gains the processors are the same, the RAM is the same (Granted the PS3 and X360 change the number of ports and what ports are available, but the main hardware is the same). With the DS's were seeing actual hardware upgrades resulting in better performance and enhanced features, some of which actually require new SDK's.  If you need a new SDK, it's most definetely a new animal, and my feelings are it should be recognized as such.

If you track the DS's as one device you might as well track the Playstation 1, 2, and 3 as one product because those are essentially the gaps ranging from the DS to the DSi Lite and finally to the 3DS.

At the very least the next time you say "DS is a selling machine" just remember how many different models are out there, and how many people probably own each and every single one of them. (Again not to say that it doesn't happen with other devices, I just think it happens a great deal more with the DS)

What hardware updates DS Lite got over original one?

And if you want to be that picky, PS2 actualy had quite a lot models rather than just original and slim, which differ slightly in hardware and firmware. That's would be a few dozens of PS2 models. So, please, define what changes in hardware and firmware are big enough to consider it a 'new' model.

Um, I guess you are thinking about the DSi and not the DS lite because the DS lite is just a slim version of the DS, nothing more. The DSi has a camera and DSiWare, but other than that it plays the same library of DS games as the other two.

The 3DS will be counted seperately as it's a completely different console.

Interesting thought.  However, you overlooked a few key elements.

3DS is a new system, with completely new games.  Obviously it will be counted separately, just like the 360 is not lumped in with the original Xbox.

Your argument misses sombe key points, though.  For one, you say that slimmed-down hardware still counts, and yet you say the DS Lite (which is literally the same as the DS, just smaller) should be counted separately.

Second, you say that due to the DSi's slightly-increased power it should be counted separately.  There has not been a single retail game released exclusively for the DSi, and none have ever been announced.  Sounds like the same system to me.  You may try to counter this with the fact that, unlike previous DS', the DSi has downloadable games, and thus should be counted separately.  I would then motion that all the Xbox 360s that were sold without a hard drive be separated from those with one, as the same situation applies.

Ergo, DS, DS Lite, and DSi all get counted together, while 3DS is obviously its own console.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Would that make you feel better?

People, don't forget about Face Training which is a retail game that can only be played with the DSi, because cameras are required.

In Japan, it originally came with a camera that fit into the GBA slot on DS/DS Lite.

Anyway, Wii's the real selling machine... it's the only single model of hardware over 100m.  That's something no single Game Boy, PlayStation or DS model has ever managed (or probably ever will).

Agreed.

TS, let me educate you about this subject:

The DS, DSL and DSi are the same console with the same games. They are tracked the same because they are the same console like PS2 and PStwo, like the Xbox360, the arcade model and his slim model. That's exactly the same.

The 3DS is a new console and will be tracked differently.
