Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why Nintendo does not release a killer app for 3DS launch?

I am watching the line up of the 3DS at launch in Japan and I assume that we won't get more than them.

Nintendo release only one game for the launch and it's just Nintendogs cat.... Sure maybe some people who have been playing the first one want to play again, but it probably won't have the success of the first one.

Nintendo had showed Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Pilotwings, Zelda OOT, Kid Icarus, Paper Mario etc.... But nothing for launch.

I thought they would have done the maximum to support their console from the start. The line up is really weak for me and Nintendo may fail their launch because of that. For the DS they had Mario 64.

they are trying to let 3rd parties make their mark on the system before they start launching their heavy hitters, it's not like they will be able to meet demand for the first month or so anyway...

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

Just one killer app is all they need. Then they bring out the next one when the steam dies down. This has been working for the DS and Wii (although they really mistook Wii Music and Other M for being system sellers).

Bring them all out for launch would be like the PSP, which lost momentum after the first year (although Monster Hunter saved it).

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

You said it yourself man, The DS had a weaker launch than what the 3DS is looking to have, Nintendogs sold double the amount the original Mario 64 sold, it's already double the launch power right there. don't forget that the big DS games didn't arrive until after launch, Nintendogs, Mario Kart, Brain Age, New Super Mario Bros. DS etc..

As I say this however, I also have a few more points to add. Numero Uno, The launch list you are looking at is the Japanese launch list and it is quite a great launch list for Japan. Secondly, and in relation to the first point, the rest of the world will in all likely hood receive a more substantial launch list including Zelda, Pilotwings, Steel Diver or a combination of these. Finally, Nintendo stated at E3 last year that they are anticipating the greatest 3rd party support for the launch of any console they have released for the 3DS and so I doubt they want to crowd the other games out with their own.

Oh one more thing...

People that see the 3D on this thing, will want one at launch, without even playing the games. Playing with the 3D camera, the included AR games etc will be enough to sell systems, and that is something you seemed to overlook.

OH and of course... They have a huge DS install base that a percentage of will want to upgrade from... There are so many reasons why Nintendo would be dumb to stack the launch, why you worried?

Wait, Nintendogs Cats and Layton AREN'T killer apps in Japan?

Call me surprised

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

This is your answer. If Nintendo back off 3rd parties sell games initially and therefor with profits will start work on the next 1 or 3 games. for the system.

If Nintendo released all theri good games. People would only buy them 3rd party would totally fail. Support would stop and Nintendo would be in the situation Wii is in atm. Long droughts of no good software (well games that I am into).

Given the above sales, I would call Nintendogs and Cats a killer app.

who cares, there is so many heavy hitters from 3rd party's that can hold me over that i wouldn't even care that first party's even exist  lol

Nintendo has yet to reveal its big gun... NSMB 3DS!

As I have said before, systems live and die by their software. Tech people may buy it early on, but this will not last for more than a month or so. What's the uniqueness of it's technology wears off, it's the games that will sell the system. Same thing with the Sega 32X. It did well early on, but then fell do to lack of strong software.
