Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii motion control is not what it is cracked up to be!

I read this thread mostly to bust on what I perceived from the title to be a slight to the Wiis motion controls. How misleading of a thread title was this!

The title of this thread is totally appropriate.

Based on the heading, I kind of figured this thread would be about why the Wii Remote is bad, but it's a thread about why the Wii Remote is good. That's not a very fitting title.

actually the heading is perfectly accurate, provided you follow the logic properly. This is based on the assumption that Wii haters have made about the controls being clunky and wrong, usually because they aren't aware of the subtleties of their motions.
Hence the Wii remote is not a clunky motion sensor, as many haters would believe the wiimote to be.

Also, I'd like to thank topcat8 for letting me know about the direction pad. I knew abotu the A, B, A+A, and the 1 and 2 button, but I didn't realize that the D pad did anything.

With that in mind, I'd say the golf is the only aspect of Wii sports that I find lacking, though I'd like to see a boxing game that uses the joystick and A, B, C, and Z buttons to allow you to move, instead of needing to use the motion control for that.

The awareness of irony is totally apparent

Based on the heading, I kind of figured this post would notice how there is an obvious case of irony in which the poster is guilty of the very same issue that he is complaining about, but it seems to be a thread in which this case of comedic irony was missed. That's not a very fitting title.

Where Wii boxing is concerned I have found it has more to do with the distance you are from the TV. You need to get back about 10 feet and then everything starts working a lot better. Has anyone else noticed this? If you have not tried backing up some, give it a try and see what you think. I used to think that the response was lacking and then backed up and noticed a huge difference in the timing and response time.

I can't understand why distance would be an issue, since Wii boxing doesn't use the pointer at all. I suppose I could try it sometime, but the Wiimote will only be affected by your location when you're using the pointer, otherwise you can be anywhere in the entire freaking room you want.

One thing I will note is that in Wii golf, when I was having trouble getting it to register my moves properly, I found that turning the wiimote so that the b button was towards me and the a button away would help, as I found that in these circumstances my hand position had the b button or a button turned towards teh screen as i swung, which seemed to screw thigns up.

Also, with Wii golf, I found that for the driver and the iron, it registered better when my swing went from winding up and then swinging it until the wiimote pointed directly down, however, the putter and wedge actually worked better when I started from pointing the wiimote straight down and then swung forward.

I find no difference with distance in any Wii Sports game.
I have played boxing just as competently about 1metre from the screen [nearly hitting it] as i have 4-5 metres.

@GreyAcumen, i agree golf is probably the most lacking in control sophistication and refinement... but if we are talking motion control only then basball is in fact the worst, with both batting and pitching the remote only registers that the remote has moved, and how quickly it accelerated... the buttons are needed to refine baseball controls.
Golf registers which way you swing [like tennis] but if you swing fast backward it can cause a lag when you swing forward. I find when driving/pitching it is best to swing back slow and hold the club [remote] in position for a second [like having to point up in bowling]. Then swinging, I have no problems this way at all.
With putting i know what you mean, i usually give only a slight backswing [few cm] before a flick forward for putting.

I'll take wii golf as the worst one. While I enjoyed playing wii tennis and baseball, golf was easily the worst with incredibly bad response.

First off Wii Sports was one of the release console games so of course it is going to have shitty controle. If you look at games now like Mario Galexy,Metroid Prime, Medal of honor Hero 2 ect... You can see what the controles are suppost to be!!!

Exaaaaaactly :D
