Is Final Fantasy On The Verge Of Collapse?

The sales of the series have been going down since FFX. The critical reception and fan reaction to the series has been getting worse and more mixed. Finally the series took out a game that for the first time even the most blind Final Fantasy fans could see is terrible (FFXIV). Now the series has no respect in the gaming media, its become a laughing stock on every forum I visit. In 2010 Final Fantasy games haven't sold well either (FFXIV and FFXIII showed poor sales), maybe 2010 is the year that will be remembered as the collapse of Final Fantasy?

For me the cracks started forming when I was disappointed with FFX and then cracks grew deeper with X-2 (after this I never got a Final Fantasy title new, always got them used), XII, XIII and finally FFXIV ripped apart everything. I just think the series is going the way of Crash Bandicoot, Spyro and Tomb Raider now.

What do you think?

FFXIII sold badly? Just no. It's the fourth best-selling FF.

Its sold 4.45 Million, thats 7th best selling and below 5 million is poor for Final Fantasy.

um, no.

FF is less a franchise and more a certain style of game. Only certain things are the same in the games, and that gives the "franchise" the ability to adapt whenever it needs. One day, FF may look completely different, and we'll look back and say, "wow, remember what FF was like back in it's teens".

You've gotta remember that the ps3 still doesn't have as many consoles in the wild as the ps2 did.

The other thing is that ffx was riding the ff7 wave. People got hooked with 7 and 8 and it matured at 10. Does this mean that none of the further ffs did well? Nonsense. Think of ff7 and 8 as ARTIFICIALLY increasining the userbase. FF was always popular before 7, and even if future ffs simply return to their old popularity, then they will still be here forever.

Also, it will end up (Lifetime) as the second best-selling FF in the Americas and EMEAA.

On the verge? Maybe. Collapsed? Definitely not. FFX was great, though it was much more controversial than the previous games. FFXII was a good game, it just changed too much. Personally I felt its storytelling was too disappointing. Anyway, too different. And while FFXIII showed a lot of potential, it had way too many bad things in it. Still, the only truly horrible game is FFXIV and that's an MMO.

The direction the series has been going to is bad but there's yet hope.

Why would you exclude the 360 version?

Edit: I see you made a mistake.
