Forums - General Discussion - Amazon Buys Rowling Custom Book - 4 Million Dollars

Amazon.com to J.K. Rowling: Thank You

We're incredibly excited to announce that Amazon has purchased J.K. Rowling’s The Tales of Beedle the Bard at an auction held by Sotheby’s in London. The book of five wizarding fairy tales, referenced in the last book of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is one of only seven handmade copies in existence. The purchase price was £1,950,000, and Ms. Rowling is donating the proceeds to The Children's Voice campaign, a charity she co-founded to help improve the lives of institutionalized children across Europe.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard is extensively illustrated and handwritten by the bard herself--all 157 pages of it. It's bound in brown Moroccan leather and embellished with five hand-chased hallmarked sterling silver ornaments and mounted moonstones.

Enjoy these first images of the book. We'll be adding reviews of each of the fairy tales as we can get them up in the coming hours. For the curious of mind, Amazon editors are now taking questions about the tales from all comers on our discussion boards (located further down this page).

Wow , thats one huge ammount of money that was given out for nothing ...

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

ok how could someone give that huge amount of money for somthing like that

£2,000,000 well spent as it's for a kids charity.
Well done Amazon, althought it's a drop in the ocean compared to what Amazon and J.K Rolling pin are worth.

I loathe J.K Rowling and her work. Sorry, I just do.

Around the Network

Let's see they spend a couple million, and get exclusive content to drive people to their site, massive advertising from the new report, a better more charitable public image, and a tax write off for the donation. All during their busiest time of year.

Yeah I can't imagine why they would do this. :)

Final* Word on Game Delays:

The game will not be any better or include more content then planned. Any commnets that say so are just PR hogwash to make you feel better for having to wait.

Delays are due to lack of proper resources, skill, or adequate planning by the developer.

Do be thankful that they have enough respect for you to delay the game and maintain its intended level of quality.

*naznatips is exempt

right because charity auctions are truly worthless.

No, but Rowling is! I think that was his point.

That's the whole point of charity auctions though. You grossly overpay for something that isn't really that valuable. Like Brunch with MC Hammer.

That's great that the cash is going to charity and all, but I was hoping the book might be published at some point. I'm sure it will eventually though. :)
