This is where my confusion lies. They reiterate the 5.5 million sold number. In it's first two weeks, it shipped 5.52mill copies. Seems to make sense that it's sold through that shipment by now, right? VGC has it at 4.89 mill currently, but I could see an adjustment here soon, even if it's just to like 5.2mill copies.

I honestly think you are looking for something that isn't there..

Such as?

About 300k UNDERTRACKEDZ!

I can see an adjustment, yes, even if I'm overestimating how much it could be. But that's not irrational given a game of that caliber, releasing in such a busy part of the year. I wouldn't be surprised if several other titles receive adjsutments as well.

This isn't the same as someone who runs around screaming "undertracked" at every turn, which is the impression he's giving off.

How am I giving that impression, I was calmly and politely saying I think you are trying to put your own interpretation on something which seems pretty clear to me.

If this is sold then that means that there has been a further shipment... now, we all know how this works... if they had shipped say another 1.5m or so they would be saying "hey we shipped 7m GT5"

What number you expect see in the financial report: 5.5M or 7M???

5.5m

If it is more then here they are talking tabout sold to customers and thats what the 5.5m would represent, but with no further shipments then I would have to question the vgc number as being too high, unless supply is extremely tight and it is really difficult to find, which i can tell you is not the case in the UK where it has sold the most.

what are your thoughts on the subject?

For me is petty clear.

Sony give us the only number they have now... 5.5M shipped figure of the first two weeks after launch... the same with PS3, Sony don't have the number yet.

For the financial quarter the actual number will be revelead and my point is how much the second shipment is? 1.5M, 2M, 3??? I don't know but I expected number over 7 million shipped for 31th Dec.

Cant argue with that.  But if the figure remains at 5.5m....?

LOL I'm wrong and you are right ;).

horray!! another 15 page thread of meaningless banter over the meaning of the word "sold" to sift through later today!!

True.. lol

Mario Kart (Wii) has solver over 25.8 million copies. lol!!

Forza 3 outsold GT5 in America this week. lol!! Forza 3 has been out for 62 weeks. Just shows how weak the game is in the U.S.

Now if we jump over to EMEA, it has sold 181K. I suspect Japan sales will be lower then the U.S.. So probably about 300K this week and 1/2 of that next week. I still don't see GT5 surpassing GT4 in sales in it's lifetime unless Sony is nice enough to rebundle GT5 again next holiday.

Forza 3 is extensively bundled with an Alan Wake voucher right now.

GT5 has been bundled as well in EMEA region. Not much of a difference. The U.S. bundles are over now though.

You said I'm looking for something that isn't there (which can only be taken in a negative way since no matter how calm you, admittedly, were, it came off like a vague accusation of an uncertain assumption).

My point is pretty simple, an adjustment doesn't seem too irrational. These things happen every year, regarding holidays, with all big titles. Sony's claims of 5.5mill sold is where my confusion lies, because it comes off as "old news" when this same thing was said two weeks after GT5's launch. It seems a little redundant to repeat that number without any real significance.

They repeat numbers all the time...?  I don't get why you find it odd now.  They repeat numbers so they make sure people hear them, and when people expect to hear about the product and have no new numbers.

I mean, you don't think it'd be even stranger that they've sold exactly how much they previously shipped?

What are the actual odds of that?  It would mean they sold through their shipments, and shipped more (or haven't shipped more, making shipped still accurate.) yet none of that new shipment has sold.

That's... extremely unlikely.

This thread gave me a migraine reading it.

Now, GT5 is on its second shipment in Japan where a few people here keep calling it a flop, but somehow think Sony hasn't shipped new copies in the place the game is doing great. What's sad is the fact people defend these things depending on the console they follow.

It makes more sense then Sony has sold exactly as much as they've shipped previously and none of their second shipments, or that the combination of new and old shipments somehow magically adds up to the first shipment... which is another thing being suggested and seemingly based on console following..

It could be eithe rof the above but it being neither and just and old number is by far the most logical assumption, considering retailers always talk shipped, unless tracking data is mentioned it's silly to suggest it's actually sold.

Ultimately, with something like GT5, numbers sometimes are either misreported or misunderstood (similar situation to Halo: Reach, if you remember).

I'm only puzzled by some of the backlash from people that are so against a little curiosity and/or confusion.

Really?  I mean, you have been on this site longer then that.

I mean, you were around when Ioi had to freaking ban people from talking about shipped numbers on the forums because people were doing the EXACT same thing for console sales.  I believe it was the PS3... that or 360.

Either way, how often does this happen and threads like this happen?  Pretty much nonstop all the time.  Heck, there is a nother one about Kinect as well... though thankfully said article actually has a retraction where Microsoft clarifies it is sell-in.

When was the last time one of them that didn't quote a tracker was ever actual sellthrough?   Pretty much never right?

I think Sony's shipped more after that 2 week benchmark, but I also don't think these figures are sold through.  The two statements aren't mutually exclusive, Sony's just using an old figure.

And Japan is a flop, 2nd shipment or not.  It's sold in the same range as RGG4 and Hokuto Musou (550k-ish) which is something I think NO ONE really saw coming.  I was given hell for saying it wouldn't crack a million, but even I still figured like 800k plus. :/
