Forums - Sales Discussion - Major retailer doing a "upgrade to a PS3 / 360 by trading in your Wii"

In New Zealand, and maybe in Aussie too, as it's an Aussie company. I was in the EB Games store today (buying Dragon Age Origins for cheap) and the in store announcement went something like: "Upgrade to a Playstation 3 or Xbox 360 today by trading in your Nintendo Wii and get an extra $20 for your trade in".

I almost laughed at the nerve of a retailer essentially dissing the number 1 console with the implication that it's an inferior machine to the other machines on offer.

I guess it might also mean EB Games is a bit short on used Wii's to sell, and/or has a few more 360s and PS3s in stock than what they expected post Christmas.

Anyone else come across gaming retailers openly offering to trade in one current gen console in order to sell another?

Apparently they want some used Wii consoles or they really want to sell HD consoles. Regardless, calling it an upgrade might actually motivate people to take advantage of the promotion.

Also, taking into consideration that the HD consoles are far superior when it comes to hardware capabilities. Calling it an upgrade isn't that absurd.

Wish more retailers gave this incentive. I think it would be good for the industry and really help 3rd parties. I know this sounds cliche, but many people I know have Wii's they never use, and they have HDTV's without any HD content. It could spark more then just the games industry. Once these people hook up an HD device to the "peace of shit HDTV that looks worse than there old TV" they may just start watching a lot of movies as well.

the word upgrade is used to fool them in trading in their Wii

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

They may as well just buy a 360 or PS3 for all the value that offer gives.

It is absurd when all that matters is games, otherwise the original Xbox was an upgrade of the PS2.

CURRENTLY PLAYING: Xenoblade (Wii), Super mario 3D land (3DS), Guild Wars (PC)

Well if all that matters is the games then it's an upgrade. In my opinion and maybe based on reviews.

I'm kidding ofcourse. They are all equal, everybody knows that.

That's a very romantic way of seeing it, but if games really were all that mattered then why did people buy different consoles after SNES or PS1 or PS2 ? These consoles arguably had the best game line-ups ever and still people bought different consoles after that.

They seem to be also clearing out all the used Wii's they have. They're selling them for $134 each with 12 months warranty, which is pretty much less than half the retail price compared to every other store.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.
