Forums - Sony Discussion - Geohot KO's Sony. PS3 now open to Custom Firmware, homebrew and hacks.

Incredible, absolutely incredible. Geohot has done it! He has pasted the metldr key on his website. This means that you can now decrypt and sign ANYTHING ON THE PS3 system. Essentially, this is about as hacked as the PS3 can get. Expect many individual developers to use this and package up something ready for budding mainstream hackers. For those wondering what exactly this means, it means that the PS3 is fully open and developers can create things like custom firmware and signed homebrews right now. Stay tuned. Keep up to date with all the latest developments on here and at Twitter through

jeez...I guess it's all down to the few honest gamers who choose to maintain the authenticity of their machines.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

So taking advantage of homebrew makes one dishonest?

Ever dabbled in the world of homebrew? You would learn a lot.

I doubt it, some game are way too large to download and burn. I expect more on the lines of renting from Gamefly and copying them to an HDD through use of a loader program.

Here's an idea: come down off your high horse and use your head for a second.

I paid good money for my PS3, and one of the reasons I did so was because of its ability to run Linux. This was an advertised feature.

But Sony decided to take that ability away from me, even though I am not a pirate.

I am definitely reinstalling Linux on my PS3. I am regaining functionality that I paid for, and Sony can eat shit if they have a problem with it.

Homebrew on the PS3? PASS, I like keeping my PS3 the way I originally purchased it for. Games. Which I purchase from a retail store. Money well spent in my honest opinion.

And your going to depend on a hacker who caused Sony to remove the feature away from you in the first place.

I understand that your angry at Sony but once you sign their online agreement pretty much done from there dude.

The system was cracked in a deliberate effort to restore functionality that Sony took away in the first place. Geohot and failoverflow, the two most responsible for the crack, have both said that they do not condone piracy.

Piracy may come from this hack, but that's Sony's fault. They punished legitimate Linux users due to a potential for piracy. Linux users took back what they paid for, and now there is definitely going to be piracy.

Sony has nobody but themselves to blame.
