Could 2011 be the last year for any of the current systems? Well it's a good time to guess considering a lot of events could happen this year and we know some of those events, so let's see:
DS: Nintendo's handheld'll have 7 years in the market next November. The sales are still quite good but the arrive of the 3DS is inminent this year, still the DS has a good amount of games some big monsters like Pokemon Black/White and Professor Layton, some licensed things like Lego Star Wars and some niche titles like Radiant Story and Okamiden.
PSP: Will celebrate 6 years in the market next March. Aside from Japan the system got low sales last year, plus rumors (almost confirmed) of a PSP2 could set the end of the PSP. 2011 lineup is brilliant but almost 100% japanese and full of RPGs and SRPGs like Tactics Ogre, Valkyria Chronicles 3, Legend of Heroes, God Eater, Ys Chronicles I and II, among others.
Wii: Next november the Wii’ll celebrate 5 years in the market. One of the weirdest situations in gaming history is that the system that got the best sales last holidays (and probably the entire year) get the most inconsistent lineup for the next year. In fact according to Game Informer Wii’s lineup is mostly licensed titles and a couple of first party titles like Mario Sports Mix and Legend of Zelda. But with Nintendo is hard to speculate considering that it’s a company that revealed their entire lineup for the second half of 2010 in just one day.
Overall I think the DS is the best candidate to see their last hurrah this year, I don’t see Nintendo pulling any major franchises or titles for this system, but in term of sales could do great things with a price cut. PSP is in a critical stuation outside of Japan but I don’t know if that could be enough to pull the PSP2 so fast (maybe a E3 announcment) and the Wii honestly I don’t know. I think that this year we could get strong informtion about its sucessor but Nintendo seems confident to squeeze any penny that could get from this system.
