Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Will Nintendo have new IPs for 2008?

Does anyone know how long before Pikmin and Animal Crossing were released that they were announced? And at what event?

if they get announced it will most likely be at E3 08

This thread is silly.

First, Nintendo doesn't normally bring out its new IPs until the 2nd or 3rd year their console has been out, they certainly don't try to launch them with the platform, that would be too risky. If you look at DS, you can see that that's where most of the new IPs are premiering at the moment.

Second, anyone paying attention knows there are several new IPs coming, including one from Miyamoto and at least 2 from Retro.

Third, what bothers me isn't that people claim Nintendo isn't making new IPs, it's when Nintendo does make new IPs and those people whining never touch them. Seriously, if you're not in line first day for Disaster, you shouldn't be talking. I don't care if there isn't line in front of the store, you MAKE ONE, and you make all of those people in that line buy that game right beside you.

It is for these three reasosn that I conclude this thread was lite-trolling fare.

Tag - "No trolling on my watch!"

we are getting ssbb and mario kart this winter/spring (thats like bringing out two halos in the same year) plus probably the new IP Disaster. And I'm sure a couple franchised games like pikmin and animal crossing will appear. They also have wii fit coming to the west as well as probably a couple more casual games. Do we really need too many new IPs. Nintendo is bringing out what will probably be the two best multiplayer games on any system next year, beyond that i'm hoping for 3rd party new IPs. Nintendo makes enough of the great games, lets see some high budget, high quality new IP 3rd party support already!

end of '08 predictions: wii - 43 million,  360 - 25 million, ps3 - 20 million

Games I've beat recently: Super Mario Galaxy, Knights of the Old Republic, Shadow of the Collossus

Proud owner of wii, gamecube, xbox, ps2, dreamcast, n64, snes, genesis, 3DO, nes, atari, intellivision, unisonic tournament 2000, and gameboy

I think the Wii in general needs to become a home of new IP's, both first and third party. For most franchises I don't think the ideal of motion controls is the correct way in progressing them forward, and I think they'd be more suited to the HD gaming style. The games which best express the Wii Remote have generally been new IP's (Zack and Wiki, Trauma Center, Wii Sports etc), and I find myself most excited about either new IP's or old franchises seeing a resurrection.

Nintendo do need to lead by example on this, but I don't honestly think any company can afford to do this in their consoles first year. PS3 has suffered heavily due to not having an recogniseable franchises, and that's generally why all the new IP's Sony created for it have had little impression on Hardware sales thus far. Now the Wii is successful though I'm hoping to see Nintendo innovate a bit more with new characters.

Miyamoto said in an interview post-E3 they're currectly working on a new IP for the Wii, in the same vein Pikmin was new to the GameCube. I can find a link if anyone doesn't want to believe me (Just quote this post and ask), but I can't be bothered to look if you'll take my word on it :P.

I see the impotus more on 3rd parties though. We're all tired of spin

Of course there will be. This is the Wii's first year. The first year is just a warm up, next year we will be seeing new revealings from all competitors.

Every new IP published by Nintendo last generation:

Pikmin
Battalion Wars
Chibi-Robo
Custom Robo
Eternal Darkness
Odama
Advance Wars (first outside Japan)
Fire Emblem (first outside Japan)
Animal Crossing (first outside Japan)
Golden Sun
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles (They own 2nd party rights)

This generation to date:

ASH: Archaic Sealed Heat
Big Brain Academy
Brain Age
Clubhouse Games
Jump Stars (Japan only, but great import)
Electroplankton
Elite Beat Agents
Hotel Dusk
Inazuma Eleven
Jet Impulse
Magical Starsign
Magnetica
Meteos
Nintendogs
Planet Puzzle League
Polarium
Project Hacker
Trace Memory
Time Hollow
Touch Golf
Wander Donkey (Don't ask)
Wii series (Sports, Fit, Play, Chess, Music, Motorsports)
Disaster: Day of Crisis
Endless Ocean
Excite Truck

Most of those are on the DS (all of them except the last 4), but you should have no concern at all about new IPs on the Wii.  I seriously doubt any company has published as many new IPs as Nintendo in the last 3 years.

Guys, what are IPs?

Project Hacker
Trace Memory
Time Hollow

Wander Donkey (Don't ask)
Wii series (Sports, Fit, Play, Chess, Music, Motorsports)

Excite Truck That's not new either. It's part of the Excite IP, which merely included bikes before, but does count.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

2/25 is no big thing, Nintendo is still pumping out lots of new IPs. I also think people need to consider whether the IP is really important when considering something like the Wii series. That series is more about creative game applications than intellectual property, and it's possible for something like Wii music to attract a totally different audience than Wii Sports or Wii Fit. The Wii name is a bit of a good rallying call for the products, but there's wider-ranging potential than with an IP like Halo or Zelda, where you're always going to be stuck with that fantasy world as a starting point.

Super Mario Galaxy and Mario Party both feature the same characters and "universe", but they appeal to different audiences.  Is the game design not part of the "intellectual property"?
