Forums - Gaming Discussion - What would "revived JRPGs" look like, besides larger sales numbers?

The best JRPGs this gen are taking their lessons from WRPGs imo.  Dragon Quest IX, Xenoblade and The Last Story all fall into this camp.

They are redefining the genre?  Would it be better, if this is the case, to say Xenoblades and Last Story would be better as redefining RPGs in general, rather than just say they are JRPGs?

Maybe, though some of the stuff they're innovating in (for Japan) is also being done already in the west by companies like Blizzard, Bioware or Bethesda.  The fusion might lead to something new though, but I think their influence (if any) on the development community will be moreso in Japan.

Western companies trying to make a "JRPG" usually turns out disastrously anyway (see: Sonic Chronicles).

jrpgs are doing bad? this gen i have played plenty of awesome jrpgs. some excelled in certain areas more than others but i see nothing wrong with jrpgs lives right know. alot of your minds are muddled if you think last gens jrpgs were waaaay better than this gens because they werent. But ahhhh its all a matter of opinion I suppose.

Well, people tend not to see a lot on the PS3, where they thought they would show up.  People had issues with FFXIII.  And then people see the sales figures on Western RPGs and they wonder why JRPGs aren't doing the same.

alot of people said the same things about ff12 last gen. Also after the 360 owned the rpg genre for the first couple years of this gen fans should know now not to count on last gens leader in something to be the leader this gen and besides it usually takes a couple years for a certain console to be stacked with certain genres.  the wrpg thing is well suprising but the games are good just like jrpgs its just that alot of jrpgs dont appeal to a wide audience like wrpgs do this gen in my opinion.

I'm pretty sure that dwarfs the majority of WRPGs in sales.

the problem is just the cultural gap between american and japanese developers. The story in jrpg are usually to melodramatic and the characters are whiny. Also the gameplay hasnt been innovative until recently with games like demon soulds. I love the Persona serious but i just imagine my friends playing it like they do with halo or assassins creed

We talking about home consoles, from jRPG sales in ps3 and xbox 360 only final fantasy XIII sold more than 2 million units. There's no other jRPG that suprass that score.

one can't really say JRPGs need to be revived, when one only counts 360 and PS3.  JRPGs are at their strongest on the two portable consoles this generation.  Alternatively I could say that WRPGs are dead - if I only count games on the DS, instead of PC and the HD platforms.

Even if we look at handhelds, apart from Pokemon, Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy nothing else does that well, just like on consoles apart from Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, nothing does well. In terms of quality, handheld JRPG are better than not only console JRPG's, but console WRPG's too in my opinion. (Until The Last Story releases anyway)
