=The number of people who own a 360 and don't own a PS3, who are big enough FF fans to buy a FF game that according to many FF fans is a bit of a let down...
You expect that number to be significant? I think not.
One must assume SE and MS knew the absolute sales potential would be low, but that it was economical to localise the 360 version for Japan. It probably cost them about 5000 units in sales to do the localisation, if that, so they've made a small profit week 1. But the exercise is obviously more for the benefit of MS than SE, so it's possible MS paid the full cost of localisation.
Doesn't really give much of a reason for other FFs to be multiplat in Japan though. It's obvious the FF fanbase in Japan is all on PS3, or at least 98.5% of the fanbase.
ON a Worldwide basis though I think, going multiplat was a smart move. FFXIII across both platforms has surpassed 6 million. But I reckon if it was PS3 exclusice worldwide it might only have reached 5 million at this point in time. Yes, I reckon an exclusive FFXIII, with the sort of marketing that comes with it, would have sold about 500K PS3's over time throughout Americas and EMEAA. So Sony lost a fair bit from FFXIII going multiplat, but SE gained from it. VsXIII will be an interesting story.
