Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Help! Getting the open tray error!

So I have a 360 slim 4gb and it worked fine for the first few months. I wanted a 250gb hdd add-on though so I bought one from e-bay from a seller with fantastic ratings. The HDD has the Microsoft logo and looks completely legit and it seems to work. The only problem is that ever since I got the HDD, I`ve been getting the open tray error (which is when you pop your disc in and instead of letting you play the game, the dashboard displays the message 'open tray'). Here's the catch though: I get this error even if I take my HDD out so I'm confused whether or not it's a coincidence that this problem happened around the time I got my HDD or whether my HDD caused it.

My question to you guys is this: Should I return the HDD or should I keep it (since it seems to be working fine) and send my 360 in for repair by using my 3 year warranty from Best Buy?

I have an old model and whenever I get this error I turn off the console then flip it vertically, turn it on and then off, then flip it on it's side again and turn it on once more. This method hasn't let me down. If it doesn't seem to work, use your warranty.

yeah better send the 360 to MS/BestBuy.

or try this first (I know it's a fat model) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wwhm1djj9n0
Seems to work for a few people. Just don't bang it too hard.

You know what I did when I had this problem with my (old) 360 ?
Sadly I wasn't so clever to look up if it's fixable as that video suggests. I thought the laser in the drive was broken, so I opened my 360 (out of warranty at that time) and built in the drive from my brother's RROD'd 360 (even older than mine).
Sounds easy, but trust me it was a lot more complicated than that.

Its going to break most probably.

It happened to me, what I did was bang on the top slightly, however this method will only work for two-three months and your system WILL fail eventually, this is almost guaranteed, its a fault with the DVD drive.

Changing the DVD drive should help but its very complicated and you lose your warranty completely. So, send it to MS as fast as you can, especially if you haven't lost the warranty yet.

If you don't have the warranty, you should try fixing it yourself. There are many youtube videos about it, you can follow them if you like.

EDIT: I see you have the warranty. Use it. This problem has got nothing to do with the HDD.

Funny, I've just recently experienced this with one of my old ones. My tray would keep opening so I just started to forcefully hold it in while trying to start the game from the HDD. Sometimes it would take a few tries to get it to work but it always did. Then it just stopped happening but I suspect I haven't seen the last of it.

It sucks you are having this with a slim but as far as I know Best Buy should let you just swap it out for a new  one no questions asked. I have a friend that got a 3 yr. warranty on a fat and he's already exchanged for a console and a controller. From what I remember he said it was quite painless. I'd avoid dealing with MS and the 1-800-4myxbox number at all costs, the worst customer service I've ever had to deal with (several times).

Its a problem with the dvd laser as far as I know. If its out of warrant and you have the tools (mainly a multimeter) you can adjust the DVD pot setting to make the laser stronger. You can also do as someone else said and if you have a broken 360 you can take the dvd drive out of it and put in this one. Other than that the problem will slowly get worse and worse and happen to more and more games. I do not think the hard drive could of caused this

You could always vacuum the inner tray, it worked with my friend when his disc drive wouldn't read games.

What are we talking a turn of a screw and some meter readings here?

yea. You open up the 360, get to the dvd drive, and there are two screws, one for the cd laser and the other for the dvd. Take an initial reading with the multimeter so you know where you started, and adjust it up slowly until it reads discs properly

Sounds simple enough. I have a feeling I'm going to have to try this in the future. It's nice to know, thanks.
