Forums - Sales Discussion - Walmart weekend special sales estimate?

I happened to be out shopping this weekend at Walmart and noticed huge lines around the time when their sale started Friday night.    They had a special for both the Wii and the PS3.   It was a $75 gift card when you bought the wii and $100 when you bought the PS3.  Both lines were nearly 100 people each and I wandered by after I was done shopping  and the line was almost gone and both the Wii and PS3's were sold out and they were working on backorder lists for those who were still in line.  I chatted for a moment with the guy working back there and he said that they went through 120 wii's and about 160 PS3's that night alone for that sale.   If that holds up at other Walmarts around the country, i have a feeling that we'll see Wii and PS3 numbers that are far far higher than we've seen this holiday season.

Has anyone else noticed that?

Thats my prediction for the next 2 weeks in the US.

I agree with the Wii bbeing above everyone else, as they have been nearly the entire holiday season (and even I'm helping out their numbers as my fiance wants the red special edition and we ordered that).   But the PS3 has been fairly close to the 360 so far and if the Walmart special helps push the PS3 to a 10-20% increase as I've never seen lines like that for the PS3, it could easily overtake the 360 this coming week.  I can't remember if this sale was for this weekend only, or if it's going all week.  If it's all week I can see the numbers being outrageous on both.

Speaking of which, does VGchartz get it's data from Wal Mart directly, or is it some sort of "estimate" based on a secret equation from the sources they do get the information from?   Either way, it's great seeing the video game industry making out like gangbusters for all consoles (with exception of the psp).

Just extrapolating based on this alone, we'd get the following.

Wii:
120 x 3,200 (US Walmarts) = 384,000

PS3:

160 x 3,200 (US Walmarts) = 512,000

The rEVOLution is not being televised

As long as there are 360 to sell, it will outsell the PS3 in the US. But that still doesnt mean the PS3 is not selling well either.

Either way, it's great seeing the video game industry making out like gangbusters for all consoles (with exception of the psp

maybe hes talking bout NA

b/c 360 had $75 deal on there $299 model with the HDD for the whole week at WM

He was talking about NA, however the stock on 360 units is much lower than that of the PS3 currently as many walmarts have been sold out of them with the deals going on.  I saw no one buying 360's that night, but like you said, it could be because the deal had been running all week.  Myself, I didn't see any ad's for the 360, just the Wii and PS3.   Even if I were conservative from what I saw at the walmart in my neighborhood and what they sold, it could easily be boosted by a few hundred thousand which would put it on par with or above the 360.

OT: well with deals like that I guess it's completely logic to see things like that, it's not everyday that you'll be able to buy your Wii/PS3 75/100$ less. Both Wii and PS3 will have a boost in their sales for this week, then it'll come back to normal. Nohing new, it would even be worrying to see people not lining up with deals like that.

Depends almost entirely upon stock in this one instance. As insane as that might sound I actually wouldn't be surprised to see that scenario reversed if MS and Ninty don't actually have enough available. PS3 probably has a metric ton of stock in the channel.
