Gran Turismo 5 Standard Cars to be Upgraded to Premium

Gran Turismo 5 December 15th, 2010 by Jordan

In the latest issue of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu (via AndriaSang), Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed that [at least some of] GT5’s “standard” cars will be upgraded to “premium” models in future updates to the game. This is good news for many fans who may have initially been disappointed their favorite car didn’t get the “premium” treatment (with a more detailed 3D model and interior view), though we still don’t know, of course, which or how many models will actually be upgraded:

Gran Turismo 5 has a mix of gloriously detailed “premium” cars and less detailed “standard cars.” In an interview with Famitsu this week, Polyphony prez Kazunori Yamauchi reveals that there are plans in place to upgrade the standard cars to premium status.

The interview also sheds some light on the upcoming late December update, it seems. I’ll hopefully be getting a look at the interview for myself shortly and will report back if there’s anything else.

Nevertheless, it’s good to get another peek at what’s in store, and we’re looking forward to more news on the next December update. Thanks to a “random person” for the tip!

Great to hear this from KY himself. What cars do you think that will get a premium treatment or what cars do you wish to get the premium treatment in future updates?

I wonder if this means they'll be using the premium cars for GT6. Otherwise it seems like a bit of a waste to upgrade them now rather than work on GT6.

But good news still.

This is great news. For people who were whining about standard cars.

Bad for the reviewers.

GT5 turns into an MMO sounds good

What I want from a game.

Gameplay > Story > Content > Graphics

Visual Style > Graphics

Smooth Camera, Intuitive Controls

Friction! When everything feels right!

Hope so, I will probably pick up the greatest hits version of the game once they...I dunno, finish it up.  I only play racers from the 1st person view so I had very little interest in picking this game up with this limitation. Hopefully all the cars will get this treatment.

Veyron for me aswell.  Good news although it doesn't matter to me since I never use the in car view when driving.

While that's good to hear, my only wish for GT6 right now is that EVERY CAR is Premium. I don't care if they only manage 500 Premiums and that's it for the game.

Bugatti Veyron, Cizeta V16T, Saleen S7, Jaguar XJ220, Lamborghini Countachs, Aston Martins, Rufs, Paganis, and the Formula Gran Turismo are what I hope for.

These are some very good ideas. I just hope that the Premium upgrade can be done even if you have the cars in your garage. I'd hate to farm 4.8M Cr all over again for a new Formula Gran Turismo and the amount needed to rebuy a premium Veyron, Countach, Cizeta and Pagani Zonda C12S.

As many, I also hope that they're focusing on using the premium assets more for GT6 than GT5, though it's very nice to see them supporting the game. Personally, the only update i'm really looking forward is some sort of tweaking to the exp system, even if to give us the option to farm XP from online races, since it becomes an excruciating job to get to the top 30's levels.

That's amazing! I was sick of racing in some cars that looked like the lights and other details had been stuck on. I wonder if the review scores would have been much different if all cars were premium in the first place? I think so.
