Forums - Gaming Discussion - When does Red Dead Redemption get any good?

So I've played RDR for about 7 hours, and I've never been so bored out of my fucking mind with a video-game - aside from watching MGS4's terribly-written cutscenes hehe - than I have with RDR. The missions, so far, have been tedious and frustrating. On top of my head, the missions were as follow: gathering up cows, gathering up cows during a storm, getting horses, racing against Bonnie, participating in a kart-race, stealing a horse, rescuing horses during a barn fire, etc. It's a complete borefest. There was only one mission that I enjoyed, and that was the first sheriff level - the one where you go into the hills or something.

I have also to mention that traveling from destination to destination is boring. Depending on your location, it takes about 5 minutes to travel to your next destination, and while you're in route, rarely does something interesting occur. Yeah there's wild animals about, but I don't find any enjoyment from killing them. Some civilians ask for your help, but the situations quickly get dull and repetitive. The most interesting thing I've witnessed while riding was when a guy got off from his horse to take a piss. So I've decided to take the stagecoach or use the camp kit from now on.

Some other gripes include the optional stuff. Poker or Texas Hold 'em is ridiculously slow, so I just  mostly skip it to my turn. Duel isn't exciting. Stranger missions have mostly been monotonous fetch quests. The finger-stabbing game (forgot what it's called) is terrible. I hated herding up cows, so I will never devote my time doing that again. Bounty hunting and watching movies were okay though.

So I ask of you: when does Red Dead Redemption become enjoyable or at least the main missions? I think the last mission I did was the kart-racing one. I want to like RDR, but God damn, has RDR been boring so far and the story hasn't hooked me yet.

And before you say: b-b-b-but all sandbox games start slow! I recently rented The Saboteur, and within the first 2-3 hours, you: get into a bar fight, race in the grand prix, steal a Nazi's colonel racecar, escape a Nazi headquarter after being captured, save your friends/family from a burning house while the Nazis are outside, and disguise yourself as a Nazi. Again, this was the first 2/3 hours. RDR, on the other hand, has consisted of: gather some herd, get a horse, gather some more herd, race, do another race, steal a horse, etc.

And oh yeah, I want to thank the guy who recommended The Saboteur. I really enjoyed the time I had with it, so I asked Santa Claus to get it for me for X-mas.

if you dont like it now your probably never going to like it becaues imo the second half of the game is worse then the first half

I stopped after taking out Billy's fort. It got . . . kind of fun. But then crossing the border just to see absolutely nothing change for the better made me quit.

And the commercials made it look so good . . .

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

Eh, I was afraid of this. I wonder if those who played it share the same opinion as yours.

@shadowblind, yeah the videos for RDR looked really good, and since many were calling it one of the best this year has offer, I decided to rent it. Good thing I rented it. It kind of reminds me of Far Cry 2. The trailers looked awesome for that game, but the game sucked, imo.

it is the most over rated game this year.So boring and repetitive like most of open world games.

get used  to it , it's just like every other sandbox game. boring!!

In other words, you're looking for big explosions and random shit flying everywhere on screen like in The Saboteur? Good luck finding that in RDR! The good thing about the game is the story for sure, but yeah, it's a typical sandbox game with a few good missions only.

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

Yeah, I'm looking for something exciting. We are in the west, partner. We are suppose to be rustlin' with them gun-slinging outlaws, not ranch work. If I'm not liking the story now, is there a chance I might like it later on or not? The Saboteur did wonders on giving a great first impression and hooking me to the story.

Any more opinions? I see this thread got some views, but no replies. I'll probably send it back to Gamefly tomorrow and get Vanquish or Majin unless people convince me to stick with it for a while.

There will be gunfights soon... that is all.

What I want from a game.

Gameplay > Story > Content > Graphics

Visual Style > Graphics

Smooth Camera, Intuitive Controls

Friction! When everything feels right!

ya theres more gunfights and action in the latter half of the game but I thought the first half was better. The ending and last couple missions are cool though
