So I've played RDR for about 7 hours, and I've never been so bored out of my fucking mind with a video-game - aside from watching MGS4's terribly-written cutscenes hehe - than I have with RDR. The missions, so far, have been tedious and frustrating. On top of my head, the missions were as follow: gathering up cows, gathering up cows during a storm, getting horses, racing against Bonnie, participating in a kart-race, stealing a horse, rescuing horses during a barn fire, etc. It's a complete borefest. There was only one mission that I enjoyed, and that was the first sheriff level - the one where you go into the hills or something.
I have also to mention that traveling from destination to destination is boring. Depending on your location, it takes about 5 minutes to travel to your next destination, and while you're in route, rarely does something interesting occur. Yeah there's wild animals about, but I don't find any enjoyment from killing them. Some civilians ask for your help, but the situations quickly get dull and repetitive. The most interesting thing I've witnessed while riding was when a guy got off from his horse to take a piss. So I've decided to take the stagecoach or use the camp kit from now on.
Some other gripes include the optional stuff. Poker or Texas Hold 'em is ridiculously slow, so I just mostly skip it to my turn. Duel isn't exciting. Stranger missions have mostly been monotonous fetch quests. The finger-stabbing game (forgot what it's called) is terrible. I hated herding up cows, so I will never devote my time doing that again. Bounty hunting and watching movies were okay though.
So I ask of you: when does Red Dead Redemption become enjoyable or at least the main missions? I think the last mission I did was the kart-racing one. I want to like RDR, but God damn, has RDR been boring so far and the story hasn't hooked me yet.
And before you say: b-b-b-but all sandbox games start slow! I recently rented The Saboteur, and within the first 2-3 hours, you: get into a bar fight, race in the grand prix, steal a Nazi's colonel racecar, escape a Nazi headquarter after being captured, save your friends/family from a burning house while the Nazis are outside, and disguise yourself as a Nazi. Again, this was the first 2/3 hours. RDR, on the other hand, has consisted of: gather some herd, get a horse, gather some more herd, race, do another race, steal a horse, etc.
And oh yeah, I want to thank the guy who recommended The Saboteur. I really enjoyed the time I had with it, so I asked Santa Claus to get it for me for X-mas.
