I went on a short weekend holiday up the coast, and got back to find all these wonderful announcements. I almost hyperventilated from continual gasping. 2011 is going to be a great year for video games .

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.
Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

I am very passionate about games. That is why it is disappointing to me to see that games are rellying more on more on fluff, and less on actual gaming. You are right that I prefer sticking to the same game for a long time rather than playing many variations of the same basic game. Though, I don't want to seem like a nazi about it. I concede that a genre or a game can be advanced by improving on presentation, maybe even story telling. Not every game can invent its own genre. My problem is that game innovation seems to be virtually at a standstill and the entire industry is focused on presentation. |
Im glad you posted that, and I do agree that there are very few developers that actually do innovate, rather they refine. I clearly see this is a problem for you and one I can respect, I guess others are better equipped to deal with the shortcomings of the industry as of late as far as innovation is concerned. Dont get me wrong, I dont go into video game purchases with a fanboy veil over my eyes just because it says halo on the cover, but im also not quite as disturbed by the industries lack of innovative intellectual properties. There is one thing I will say about the true lack of evolution as far as gameplay mechanics are concerned and something that games such as call of duty and gears of war may be solely responsible for which is publishers wanting developers to create games the way they want them made. I know I dont have to preach to you about the costs of development but this is the main reason many games end up being as similar as they are within each genre, publishers fear that if its too unique then it wont sell. Games such as heavy rain, lbp, flower, limbo, all of these incredibly unique experiences are so critical to the industry at this point because its forcing publishers to pull their collective heads out of their asses and actually take a few more risks. As youve pointed out its not as if the industry is void of any innovation, its just that there isnt enough. The good thing is more developers are gaining enough prestige and recognition that when they present ideas, such as thatgamecompany, that they dont automatically get shot down for being too different which is an awesome step in the right direction.

I admit to overstating the problem to make the post more noticeable, there is innovation still in the main stream and there is also a viable independent market. I am concerned though, because video game budgets are growing bigger and bigger, and as that happens the level of freedom to innovate declines.
I don't want to see video games move even closer to the movie industry in that sense. Anyone can see what the huge cost of failure has done to the creative process in Hollywood. From this point of view, moving to HD graphics has actually hurt gaming.

Bloody hell, put on a damn suit or something, nearly everyone that came on stage looked like a bum and Nick Sawrdson has gained weight and both he, that Lost dick and Dane Cook were all extremely unfunny. I've never had to turn my head away in disgust so many times during an event like this. The only things I liked was it had a few cool trailers, I was happy that the LIMBO team won (and dressed well) and that Guillermo Del Toro actually graced out industry with a good presentation, he was the only presenter that didn't look like a fuckwit. |
Couldn't have been worse than last year.
That was one of the worst things ever. And not just on the Internet.

Haha. I woke up this morning and realized the VGS was on Saturday and immediately went on the internet to check out... It's as I'm still dreaming.
