Forums - General Discussion - I feel so useless

Went through a stint of depression myself not too long ago, kept me from wanting to do anything, nearly destroyed my academic career. There are a few things i recommend trying.

1. Find someone to talk to. Psychologists (not psychiatrists) tend to be very good for this sort of thing and can help you work out the feelings that you're dealing with, but if you have a very smart and very understanding friend then they will do just as easily.

2. Exercise. This sounds like a joke, but it's true: 30 minutes of hard cardio every day will make you feel like a new person. Run, bike, whatever it takes - do it for half an hour, as hard as you can. Do this every day.

3. Vitamin D. I'm not a doctor so this isn't medical advice, but I found out that my (and a lot of people's) Vitamin D levels get low when I'm in a climate with low sunshine, which is nearly year-round in Ontario and may be year-round in the UK. I take 10k IU of Vitamin D per day, but 5k IU is all that most people need to stave off the winter blues.

Chances are that a couple of very simple changes to your daily regime will make you feel a lot better. If I can only recommend one, it is the exercise. My wife got me started on weightlifting a year ago and it's been one of the best ways to get my head clear.

That's very good!!

Jneul., are you a woman or a man? Are you originally from France? You have a French sounding name lol

srry never saw this coming from you, but i guse we all have our moments. for a while i was exempt from this until i left my job(kroger/ groceries not really my thing anyway). when i left i felt like i could do it all and 1 month later i called back to see if i could comeback and couldn't so like ur self i felt lost and then a small light at the end of the tunnel cast its light on me and told me to go back to school.

but unfortunatly after 3 months i couldn't go back to school either! no solution has been found for my current situation, but im the type not to stress about it! i know wht needs to happen and the role i got to play to get it done, but nothings coming together but im not waitting for things to change either; cause im going to make things change no matter how hard it maybe.

stay strong eand if you need more strength take mine, cause i have enough strength to go around.

 Jneul is a women

blah, blah, blah, poor baby. That's nothing. I'm a depressed/self-loathing person. I'm like the single al bundy. I'm a 30 yr old night-time grocery stocker, that sleeps for 10-12 hours when I'm working and on my days off I do nothing but play video games and watch movies, while reflecting on the sad excuse of a life that I have. I've lived bye myself for nine years and never had a girlfriend in my life,so even though I hate my job,I've worked there for nine yrs just for the paycheck and an escape from my life,so to me it's like going home is a defeat, but at least I don't constantly get laughed at for being an ugly,so you might think you have it tough, but remember there's always someone out there that has it 100x worse than you do.
